Tesla very much wants you to think that it is the cleaner alternative to those dirty, polluting gas cars. When you bought a Model S, you were helping save the planet, they said. However, Tesla hasn’t always done the best job complying with local environmental regulations, and according to the Houston Chronicle, it’s using a new state law to get its Texas factory removed from Austin’s environmental authority.

The factory, which is located outside of Austin, Texas near the city’s airport, was part of the city’s “extraterritorial jurisdiction,” meaning Austin environmental laws still applied. Considering its location on the Colorado River, it makes sense that the city has strong regulations to keep its water clean and prevent flooding. Unlike Austin, Travis County’s environmental regulations are more lax.

The city has since confirmed to the Houston Chronicle that Tesla did request “for land associated with Tesla’s operations” to be removed from Austin’s extraterritorial jurisdiction and that it met the requirements to do so. “Releasing properties from the ETJ does impact the city and future city residents,” the city said in a statement. “The city of Austin’s environmental regulations are more protective of water resources than unincorporated Travis County.”

The decision to leave Austin’s ETJ is ironic considering Musk initially claimed the factory would “basically be an ecological paradise – birds in the trees, butterflies, fish in the stream.” As Alexia Leclercq, policy director for People Organized in Defense of Earth and her Resources, told the Houston Chronicle, it’s also consistent with Tesla’s approach to protecting the environment since it began construction on the 2,500-acre facility.

“They have this pattern of trying to have as few regulations apply to them as possible,” she said, emphasizing that the ecological paradise Musk initially promised is “nowhere to be found.”

Once removed from Austin’s ETJ, it won’t be a free-for-all for Tesla, though. It will still have to comply with state regulations that limit how much it can pollute the river and the extent to which it can damage nearby wetlands. It is still Texas, though, so good luck with that, Austin.

Amazon MGM Studios aired the first season of its new TV show “Fallout.” It’s based on the long-running video game series that takes place in an alternative universe based on 1950s ideas of futurism, with it all leading up to all-out thermonuclear war and the aftermath. So to fit the look, any scenes that take place before the nuclear war feature ’50s dress, political ideology, and, of course, automobiles. Most of the cars in the show are actual production vehicles from the time period. One of the main characters, Cooper Howard, drives a gorgeous yellow Kaiser Darrin, and there’s even a scene that showcases the car’s super cool sliding pocket doors. A Messerschmitt tandem bubble car also makes an appearance (and there are lookalikes that you can find in the game). But the most interesting and unique car shows up in the first episode, and amazingly, it’s hidden in the background of various shots.

It doesn’t take long to spot it, as it appears in the first few minutes of the show. These scenes start at a birthday party just before the bombs drop, and it’s most visible in the shot at top when Howard takes off on horseback with his daughter in search of safety. They race past a big bright red roadster of some sort, with gleaming side-exit exhaust and a rear fin reminiscent of some period race cars. That vehicle isn’t made specifically for the show. It’s the Plymouth XNR concept from 1960 – or at least it’s a replica; more on that in a minute.

The actual 1960 Plymouth XNR concept has a heaping helping of hypnotizing history. It was designed by Virgil Exner (hence the XNR name), who worked at Pontiac, Studebaker, and most famously, Chrysler Corporation. He started at Chrysler with concept cars, and the first production cars credited to him were the “Forward Look” models that included the original C-300 that would eventually inspire the 2005 Chrysler 300. 

The styling is seriously wild. As we mentioned, it has asymmetric cues from race cars of the time, but amplified with the hood scoop that leads into a long rising cowl. The exhaust only comes out on the driver side, and then the rear has a sort of chrome star tying the rear fin in with the pseudo bumper. The radical looking fenders also appeared on the original 1960 Valiant, which was quickly placed under the Plymouth brand, with Dodge getting its own version called Lancer. The XNR even uses the Valiant’s chassis according to Motor Trend (which has an excellent, detailed look at the car from the sadly defunct Motor Trend Classic magazine).

On top of the wild looks from designer royalty, the XNR was actually a fully functional car. It had a 170-cubic-inch (or about 2.8L in metric displacement) 250-horsepower inline-six with a three-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. And while it looks as though it only has a driver seat, there is a passenger seat hidden under a removable body panel. It also featured independent front suspension with torsion springs and a live rear axle with leaf springs. Those rear leaf springs were even tidily fit to the curve of the rear body (or probably more likely, the body fit to the springs)

When Chrysler was done with the car, it began a wild journey, first going to Italy and Carrozzeria Ghia, the company that built the body. It eventually went to multiple other owners, including at one point the Shah of Iran. It was eventually found by Karim Edde, who discovered it in Lebanon in the ’80s and had to move it about to keep it safe as civil war broke out. It was then restored by RM Restorations, part of what’s now the RM Sotheby’s auction house, in the late 2000s. Following its restoration, it was shown at Pebble Beach in 2011 where it won the Gran Turismo award, which meant it was added as a drivable car in the video game series including the latest “Gran Turismo 7.” It’s actually quite fun to drive, especially with the high-revving engine. The game shows redline as being just shy of 8,000 rpm.

And that brings us to today, where the car has appeared in “Fallout.” And this is where we’re left with questions that haven’t been fully answered. You see, in addition to the original XNR, at least one replica has been produced by Gotham Garage, the custom car shop featured in Netflix’s “Car Masters: Rust to Riches.” That replica is now at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. We reached out to the PR agency for Petersen to ask if their car was used for the show, and they said it was not. HotCars reported that Gotham Garage was looking at building another replica, but it’s not clear if that ever materialized. We also reached out to Amazon for details but never got a reply. So either the car in the show was the original, or this is the mysterious second replica. There’s also the outside chance it’s computer generated, but we doubt it. Besides looking especially convincing in multiple shots and angles, it would seem odd to pick this very specific car for a CGI background piece.

Regardless, the XNR, be it the original, CGI or some faithful reproduction on Gotham Garage’s part, is a really cool car, and it’s neat to see it appear in a big TV show (and a good one, coming from this fan of the Fallout games) from one of the major studios. And we’re always happy to talk about a sweet ride.

The Tesla Cybertruck, a truck so rugged it can only be defeated by a car wash, was reportedly hit with a stop-sale recently because problems with its accelerator kept causing unintended acceleration issues. Don’t worry, though, just because a Cybertruck could attack at any time doesn’t mean it necessarily will. Also, TechCrunch reports that Tesla has now recalled every Cybertruck ever delivered to address the problem with its 7,000-pound trucks unintentionally accelerating.

Since it began delivering Cybertrucks to customers in late November of last year, Tesla has apparently built 3,878 Cybertrucks, all of which are affected by the recall. Believe it or not, though, this isn’t the first time there’s been a recall on the Cybertruck. Despite basically beginning production in December, the Cybertruck was included in a recall in January due to it and other Tesla models displaying an incorrect font size for the Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System warning lights on the dash.

This time around, things are a little more serious, with the automaker reportedly confirming to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the accelerator pedal can come loose. If it slides forward, it can get caught in the footwell, causing the powerful, heavy pickup truck to accelerate. Tesla is reportedly unaware of any wrecks or injuries that have happened as a result of this design flaw.

According to Tesla, it first found out about the problem from a customer complaint on March 31. A second customer complaint came in on April 3, and, after doing some testing, realized it needed to issue a recall after finding, “(a)n unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal.” As a result, “(r)esidual lubricant reduced the retention of the pad to the pedal.”

So far this year, Tesla’s stock is down about 40 percent and recently laid off about 10 percent of its workforce. CEO Elon Musk, meanwhile, is fighting to get a multi-billion-dollar bonus package reinstated and has even gone as far as to launch a website in hopes of convincing shareholders to give it to him.

As spring arrives and the snow starts to melt, it can be a great time to visit either of these parks, though I wouldn’t blame you for postponing your trip until summer has arrived — as of this writing there is still over 10 feet of snow on the upper mountain at Jackson Hole Ski resort right outside GTNP. The best way to visit both parks? Probably an RV from RVShare.com. Think of it as Turo but for RVs. With so much of both parks to explore, you’ll constantly be on the move; renting out an RV to stay in during the entirety of the trip means you won’t have to keep packing and unpacking as you move from place to place. There are plenty of options to choose from, from towables to Class C motorhomes. You can even get a destination delivery if you don’t want to bother moving it around.

If an RV isn’t your style, or you’re going to stay in one spot for a while, Vrbo is another great option. Whether you want to stay in a rustic cabin inside the National Park or this luxury mountain modern home is more your speed, Vrbo has you covered.

I’ve always loved the idea of camping with my family. I am very comfortable sleeping in a tent, mostly due to the fact that once I am asleep I am dead to the world for the next 7-9 hours, especially after a long day of hiking. Many cities now offer nonstop flights to Iceland. Get a seat on the north side of the plane for a chance to see the northern lights on your way to Reykjavik. Once you land, get in a camper van that you’ll call home for the next few days, or hop behind the wheel of one of the many 4x4s that we don’t have here in the states and take off.

Whether you’re interested in waterfalls or whale watching, glacier hikes or diving between tectonic plates, you can do it in Iceland. If you do go the camper van route, I highly recommend stopping at Blue Lagoon on your way back to Keflavik Airport at the end of your trip for a luxurious spa experience.

Mazda does things its own way, even when the majority of the automotive industry has agreed to do it the opposite way. Take our long-term CX-90 PHEV’s infotainment system, for example. In most circumstances, it does not operate as a touchscreen. But then in other cases, it does. This is just another example of Mazda’s long and testy relationship with touchscreens. Let me explain.

Simply put, our CX-90’s screen will only accept touch inputs while using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (which you can actually disable for in-motion driving for some unknown reason). You will note I underlined “our.” That’s because only the Premium Plus trims and every Turbo S trim have this capability, and we have a PHEV Premium Plus. If you have a different trim, the display is not a touchscreen. This functionality also aligns with the touch-capable screens measuring 12.3 inches while the touch-less ones measure 10.25.

Being able to use touch control while in Apple CarPlay is a big benefit and a significant reason to step up to a higher trim. But also, c’mon, Mazda. Why are we gatekeeping touch controls to upper trim levels? It’s not a luxury feature by any means, so it just feels wrong to treat it as such. Worse, the cheaper Mazda CX-50, CX-5 and Miata all come standard with touch control despite not offering the CX-90’s big, 12.3-inch screen. The CX-5 and CX-50 even have a 10.25-inch screen, just like the lower CX-90s. 

The above said, if you have a CX-90 without touch controls, all is not lost. Mazda has programmed the menu shortcut buttons surrounding the rotary control knob to operate CarPlay and Android Auto functions, much as it does native systems. I’ve found this can be quicker and better than using the touchscreen. For example, all that’s necessary to open your default music player is a quick stab of the “Media” button next to the rotary knob. The same applies to quick toggling to your navigation app or phone app. There’s even a “back” button placed intuitively for when you’re trying to navigate through Spotify or other menus. Plus, a quick tap of the “home” button brings you to the CarPlay/Android Auto app drawer of sorts. Importantly, a long hold takes you all the way back out to Mazda’s native infotainment interface. That puts all of your vital controls a quick tap or toggle away. The same goes for volume and seek control, which can be accessed from the handy volume knob (that rocks side-to -side to seek or rewind) right next to the big rotary control knob.

Frankly, using the rotary knob and hotkey buttons while moving is a million times quicker and feels safer than trying to stab away at a screen. I even find myself using the rotary knob and buttons more often than the touchscreen because it’s a more efficient way to accomplish certain tasks. Obviously, this isn’t always the case. Menu diving or navigating through Waze’s settings will always be better with touch control. Trying to do so via the rotary knob can turn into an arduous task, and it’s only then that I reach for the touch controls.

Would life be easier if Mazda just made touchscreens standard across the board for the CX-90? Yeah, it would be. Some tasks are better operated with a touchscreen, others with a knob, and there’s also the matter of personal preferences. Cars that offer both, for instance the new i5 and many older BMWs, are better for having this redundancy. I’m a huge defender of user interfaces designed with rotary knob control in mind – it’s one of the reasons I loved BMW’s iDrive for so long – and Mazda’s execution of such a system is superb. Now, let’s just get touchscreen control baked into every CX-90 …
