    2024 Shelby Super Snake upgrades the Mustang with insane power and plenty of carbon fiber

    The latest S650 Ford Mustang made numerous improvements over the outgoing generation, including a revised powertrain and better tech. Now that it’s had time to marinate on the new car, Shelby American has given it the Super Snake treatment, taking the already capable Mustang to the next level with far more power and performance, a unique interior, and a wide body kit.

    Shelby supercharged the Mustang’s 5.0-liter V8 with a 3.0-liter Whipple unit, bringing output to more than 830 horsepower and adding a beefier radiator and heat exchanger. All cars get performance half shafts, but manual models get a one-piece drive shaft and a short-throw shifter. A Shelby by Borla exhaust system finishes the package and gives the car a throaty sound.

    Exterior upgrades include an aluminum Super Snake hood with pin locks, carbon fiber hood vents, wide body front fenders, and a wide body front fascia assembly. Shelby also installed a carbon fiber Super Snake rear wing and rear diffuser, along with plenty of company logos, to make sure everyone knows what you’ve got. The 20-inch forged magnesium wheels cut almost 37 pounds from the stock Mustang wheels, at just nine pounds per corner, giving the car better acceleration and shortening braking distances.

    Inside, the car gets Super Snake door sill plates, a Shelby shifter for manual models, embroidered floor mats, and Cobra puddle lamps. Convertible variants add a light bar, and each car has plaques displaying its production number and engine.

    The 2024 Shelby Super Snake is a one-year-only build, and the company said it’s limiting production to 250 units in the United States and limited availability in other markets. Pricing is yet to be announced, but it’s likely significantly more expensive than other Mustang upgrades Shelby offers, such as the GT500SE, which adds $29,995 to the car’s MSRP. The good news is that the company’s builds come with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty to replace the factory coverage.

  • EVs Are Still Too Expensive For Buyers, Despite Huge Discounts

    Electric vehicles are seeing huge discounts right now, but those new lower prices are still not enough to get folks to, y’know, buy them. Now, an ever-more-bloated EV inventory is pushing automakers and dealers to slash prices even further. Five-figure price discounts are no longer out of the question.

    On average, automakers discounted their EVs about $6,000 per unit in the first quarter of 2024, according to a Cox Automotive study reported by Automotive News. Automakers and dealers alike are offering these high-ass discounts for the simple fact that people do not want to spend a huge premium on electric vehicles, and they’re now piling up on dealer lots.

    Some automakers are going well above and beyond that $6,000 average, though. Nissan is offering nearly $16,000 off its Aryia electric crossover. That works out to nearly a third of its MSRP right off the bat, and that doesn’t even include tax breaks or utility rebates for buyers. Mercedes-Benz is also making big cuts, according to AutoNews. Its EQS SUV currently getting nearly $20,000 cash on the hood, cutting the price to a tick under $105,000. That works out to a 19 percent discount.

    As of April 1, EVs were sitting on dealership lots for an average of 119 days. While that’s fallen from a peak of 169 days in mid-February — helped by the discounts — it’s still a lot higher than the 73-day supply average of gasoline-powered vehicles. Days’ supply — or the average number of days a vehicle stays in dealer inventory before selling — can include vehicles in progress, in transit and on dealership lots.

    ”Consumers … might want to wait” to buy EVs, said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights at Cox Automotive. “It’s a huge investment. Affordability is an issue.”

    But some EVs that were out of the price range for many consumers are now among the more affordable options in the new-vehicle market. With incentives, 11 EV nameplates cost less than the first-quarter industrywide average transaction price. The Ariya sold for about $35,500, according to Cox Automotive data, while the Nissan Leaf is less than $28,000. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is $36,506.

    Tesla and Ford cut sticker prices on EVs in addition to discounting. The Tesla Model 3 costs $40,547 while the Model Y costs $43,238, with modest incentives on average. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is $44,910 on average with incentives, according to Cox Automotive data. Retail prices don’t include shipping.

    This is all happening for one simple fact: the demand for EVs is cooling alongside sales. Electric vehicles made up 7.3 percent of new vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2024, AutoNews reports. Sales volume rose 2.6 percent from a year earlier, which is the right direction, but it’s a much slower rate of growth than in previous quarters. EV volume jumped 46 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2023, and 81 percent in the first quarter of 2022. This is telling us the early-adopter era of EVs is pretty much over, and the next batch of consumers isn’t so sure about the tech. From Automotive News:

    “As we move into this next wave of adoption, it’s getting more challenging,” Valdez Streaty said. “That’s why inventories are building up.”

    EV supply started last year at 59 days, a relatively typical turn time for many models, no matter the fuel type. Inventory, however, has swelled since then, crossing 100 days last May and peaking at 169 days in February. Gasoline vehicle inventory also reached a high in February, but its 82 days was less than half the average EV supply.

    Incentives and price cuts have helped sell EVs over the last few months. Ford’s supply fell to 140 days in March from 314 in February after it cut the Mustang Mach-E’s price by up to $8,100 in February.

    Nissan’s EV supply dropped to 94 days in March from 159 days in February. Dealers told Automotive News that employee discounts on the Ariya boosted sales.

    What all of this is telling me is that electric vehicles are just far too expensive for customers. Right now, folks just do not see the value in buying an EV when its internal combustion-powered counterpart is almost always cheaper. Maybe that’ll change, but prices are going to have to come way down.

    Sure, the rain may have sullied things a bit, but a day of drifting is still better than one without. This year’s Long Beach even brought us another James Deane round victory, something the series has lacked for some time now. Sure, he’s always a safe bet to do well, but you can just never get mad at him for it.

    Unfortunately for Deane, despite all that skill, he’s still stuck in the worst livery of the 2024 RTR lineup. Silver is just so boring, especially when compared with Vaughn’s geometric graphics or newcomer Ben Hobson’s black-yellow-purple style. James Deane just deserves better.

    Still, boring paint wasn’t enough to stop him from clinching the win in Long Beach. Will the Deane dominance continue into Road Atlanta, or will someone else take the crown? Is it time for Odi to move back up the podium?

    Report: The Toyota Highlander is going all-electric

    Report: The Toyota Highlander is going all-electric

    Toyota has been slower than most jumping into the EV game, but its approach has looked more competent than most others’ as time has progressed. That said, the Japanese automaker isn’t ditching electric vehicles, and a new report from CarBuzz suggests that one of its most popular family haulers could be going electric soon.

    The Highlander is reportedly moving to an all-electric configuration, which will lead to a Lexus variant called the TZ. Toyota would leave the Grand Highlander with internal combustion engines, though more hybrid options are likely.

    David Christ, Toyota’s U.S. general manager, told CarBuzz that the automaker would also expand its electrified offerings with new plug-in hybrid models. “We’re going to expand plug-in availability throughout the lineup fairly quickly,” he said. According to the publication’s sources, the most likely candidates to get plugs are the 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma, and Tundra.

    Toyota’s efforts would electrify all models except the GR86 and Supra. The GR Corolla’s time on the market is likely limited and may not cross paths with the new hybrid options. American production for those vehicles would bring tax credit eligibility, softening what are quickly becoming very expensive prices for Toyotas.

    The automaker may also abandon its bZ (“Beyond Zero”) naming scheme, though reports point to a new, smaller bZ3X to join the bZ4X soon. Beyond being hard to type, the confusing titles aren’t as memorable as other names in its catalog, so the Highlander will likely sport a more familiar badge. Christ did tell CarBuzz the company would develop better bZs in the future, though, so we might not be done with the silly names just yet.

    Toyota has held firm in its broad approach to electrification, offering hydrogen fuel cell models and committing heavily to hybrids. Even so, its new CEO, Koji Sato, has pushed for changes to platforms in development, causing some internal confusion.

    Drivers have jumped all kinds of mad stuff in recent months, including one who got airborne jumping over a low-loader on a highway. Now, a driver in California got some serious air and managed to hop over a parked pickup truck before smashing into a garage.

    The driver in Jurupa Valley, which is about 51 miles east of Los Angeles, mounted a manicured lawn before leaping through the air, reports USA Today. The car then hopped over one parked truck, before crashing through a garage door and hitting another truck parked on the driveway. As it smashed through the garage, the car came perilously close to a Ford Mustang parked inside.

    The driver of the smashed car was able to get out in one piece, but they were taken to hospital for checks by local law enforcement. As USA Today explains:

    “The driver of the vehicle was able to self-extricate prior to fire department arrival”, the department said in a statement. “The driver suffered minor to moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital via ground ambulance for further treatment.”

    Fire services attended the scene at around 6:30 am on April 4, reports USA Today. Officers found “major damage” had been caused to the home, but reported that the driver of the flying car, who has not been identified, was the only person to suffer injuries.

    The driver of the car was reportedly attempting to make a turn before they mounted the grass. The move was all caught on a Ring doorbell camera in a property opposite the crash site. In the clip, you can also see the devastation left once it’s smashed through the garage door.

    However, charges have not been filed following the incident, reports the Daily Mail. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s office, the driver experienced a “medical emergency,” which caused the incident and means that no criminal charges have been filed against them

    BMW has a lot riding on the X3; the SUV has been one of its best-selling cars since the first-generation model made its debut in 2003. The new fourth-generation X3 is around the corner, and the Munich-based brand has released photos and details to hint at the changes in store.

    While BMW previewed a bold new design direction with the Vision Neue Klasse X concept unveiled earlier in 2024, the next-generation X3 will seemingly take a different path. Rather than mimicking the concept, the SUV carries on with a more conventional-looking front end that’s characterized by sharp headlights and a pair of wide kidney grilles joined in the middle. Its door handles are now integrated into the body and it features a more tapered roof line for a sportier look. The finer design details remain hidden by rolls of black and white camouflage.

    BMW tells us it went to significant lengths to make the next-generation X3 more engaging to drive. Its engineers made the track wider, and increased both structural rigidity and directional stability. There’s a more direct steering ratio, too, and some variants will be available with an adaptive suspension system that includes electronically-controlled shock absorbers. 

    If you don’t want to drive, the next X3 will have you covered to a certain degree, at least. Details remain few and far between, but BMW notes the fourth-generation X3 “will offer an expanded selection of systems for automated driving and parking compared to the current model.” Inside, the X3 will receive the latest generation of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system and a wide digital instrument cluster.

    There’s no word on what the X3’s specifications sheet will look like. We know it’s going to be offered with internal combustion engines; one of the variants shown in BMW’s images proudly wears four round exhaust tips. It looks like a hybrid drivetrain will be available, however, as another one of the test mules has a charging port integrated into the driver-side fender. British magazine Autocar learned the global range will include four- and six-cylinder engines, including a diesel, and a plug-in hybrid system. We can, however, see either an electric version called iX3 being offered, or even a unique electric variant using the iX3 name while borrowing Neue Klasse X styling. All-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission will come standard.

    BMW will fully unveil the 2025 X3 in the coming weeks, and sales should start by the end of 2024.
