• Here’s Why Planes Have Those Curved Winglets You’ve Probably Wondered About

Millions of consumers trust airlines with their lives each day, but few passengers understand how these massive flying tubes stay airborne and why they look the way they do. I don’t remember jets having winglets when I was a kid, but on a recent work trip I took notice of the winglets on all the planes at the airport. Winglets are the vertical tips at the end of a plane’s wing, and they serve a few important functions.

Winglets reduce a plane’s aerodynamic drag by approximately 5 percent through reducing the vortices or whirling wind around the edge of a plane’s wing. These vortices are caused when the air that flows along a plane’s wings curls upward as a high-pressure zone forms below the wing and a low-pressure zone forms above the wing. As these two opposite pressure systems form and the air moves toward the tip of the wing, it creates a small tornado that produces drag and wastes energy. Winglets stop the high pressure airflow from under the wing from meeting the low pressure airflow on top of the wing, thus reducing drag. According to CNN,

In 1897, British aerodynamicist Frederick W. Lancaster patented “wing endplates,” vertical surfaces to be placed at the end of wings to stop the airflow from the bottom and the top from meeting, reducing drag. “Endplates in many ways act much like winglets do, but the improvement to the lift is rather poor, because flat plates by themselves are not very good aerodynamic surfaces,” explains Bowers.

The idea was refined for modern aircraft in the 1970s by NASA engineer Richard Whitcomb, who imagined vertical wing extensions inspired by the way birds curl up the end of their wings when in need of lift.

Whitcomb tested the idea in a wind tunnel and found that winglets could achieve a reduction of drag of about 5%. At the same time, winglet research was happening independently of NASA, and business jet manufacturer LearJet was the first to mount winglets on an actual aircraft, in 1977. Two years later, NASA first flew an Air Force KC-135 test plane – not too different from a Boeing 707 airliner – equipped with nine-foot-high winglets. Over 47 test flights, NASA confirmed Whitcomb’s wind tunnel findings.

Winglets are now seen on most small and mid-size aircraft in the world, but larger planes use raked wingtips that sweep backward more drastically than the rest of the wing. These raked wingtips are more efficient for larger aircraft, and still provide comparable wing tip vortex suppressing properties and comparable fuel savings to winglets. Aside from fuel savings, both winglets and raked wingtips improve aircraft directional stability, reducing the plane’s susceptibility to turbulence.

These seemingly simple improvements to aviation have saved billions of gallons of fuel, which means more cost savings for airline companies and fewer carbon emissions from plane travel. These little winglets serve a big purpose, and next time you fly you can assault your row neighbors with this little tidbit of knowledge.

These are the fastest-selling new cars of 2024

Automakers finally appear to be back on their feet after a few years of severe instability, but that hasn’t helped all of them in the sales department. iSeeCars recently released its study on the fastest- and slowest-selling new vehicles and found that some companies are moving vehicles off dealers’ lots at more than twice the pace of others.

Toyota was the fastest-selling new car brand between October 2023 and March 2024, moving vehicles in an average of 39.6 days. Surprisingly, Alfa Romeo came second, averaging 41.8 days on the market. Last year, we saw a list of the fastest-selling individual nameplates overall, as opposed to this study that’s ranked by brand.

    Fastest-selling new cars of 2024

    1. Toyota: 39.6 days on the market
    2. Alfa Romeo: 41.8
    3. Cadillac: 43.4
    4. Honda: 44.2
    5. Jaguar: 44.4
    6. Kia: 47
    7. Hyundai: 47.1
    8. Subaru: 49
    9. BMW: 49.1
    10. Mazda: 53.1

The brands moving inventory the fastest show a strong value and desirability for buyers. iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer noted, “Fast-selling brands like Toyota and Honda represent mainstream consumers seeking maximum value for their new-car dollar. Conversely, high-ranking luxury, low-volume brands like Alfa Romeo, Cadillac, and Jaguar reflect both their limited supply as well as high demand from affluent buyers willing to snap these models up shortly after they arrive on dealer lots.”

Of course, there is no light without darkness, and on the other side of the list are a handful of brands struggling to move inventory. Lincoln was the slowest-selling new car company, with an average of 82.6 days to sell. Infiniti was close behind at 79.8 days, and Buick took an average of 79 days to move units.

iSeeCars noted that new EVs take much longer to sell than their hybrid counterparts, at an average of 70.6 days on the market in March 2024, compared to just 49.5 for hybrids. Some of the fast-selling new brands also made the used car list. Used Hondas sold the fastest, only sitting on dealers’ lots for an average of 26.1 days. Lexus’ used cars sat for 26.3 days, and Toyota moved its used inventory in an average of 27.4 days.

  • Defender Octa coming in July with twin-turbo V8 and trick suspension

Defender Octa coming in July with twin-turbo V8 and trick suspension

Defender recently made the leap from a nameplate in the Land Rover portfolio to a standalone brand within the JLR group. The first SUV the company will launch after gaining independence is a high-performance evolution of the Defender named Octa making its debut in July 2024.

While this isn’t our first look at the Octa, the new images released by Defender give us a better idea of what to expect from the off-roader. Tall and wide, it stands out from the existing Defender variants with a bigger grille, additional air intakes chiseled into the front bumper, and what looks like a taller bulge on the hood. The massive wheel arch flares cover up a wider track, and it rides on specific wheels wrapped by off-road tires. We also spot a pair of red tow hooks poking out from the rear end and, in one picture, beefy skid plates along the underbody.

Skid plates are needed, because it sounds like the Octa is being developed for serious off-roading. It will come standard with the 6D Dynamics suspension system already available on the Range Rover Sport SV, which is a hydraulic-based technology that keeps body roll, pitch, and squat in check while increasing wheel travel. Engineers have triple-checked the Octa’s off-roading capabilities by testing prototypes in some of the harshest environments on the planet, including the deserts outside of Dubai and on off-road courses near Moab.

It’s not all about off-pavement performance; the Octa needs to be quick and capable on the pavement as well. The twin-turbocharged V8 will tick the “quick” box, while the 6D Dynamics system should give it better on-road performance than the ground clearance suggests. Defender notes that prototypes were also tested on the Nürburgring track in Germany, which is the benchmark for high-performance vehicles.

Defender will unveil the Octa on July 3, 2024, but a hand-picked group of clients will have the chance to order one before the model makes its public debut. Availability hasn’t been announced yet, but the British brand notes that a limited number of vehicles will be available during the first year of production. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a limited-edition model, but it signals the Octa will initially be hard to come by.

Former anti-union VW employee explains why he changed his mind and voted to unionize

    Screenshot: Payday Report/YouTube

Workers at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant recently voted to join the United Auto Workers union, making it the first factory outside the Big Three to unionize. It’s a huge win for the employees who work there but also for labor rights in general. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that many of those same workers voted against joining the UAW. It also may only be the first among many more factories that vote to unionize this year.

So what happened between 2019 and now to change that many people’s minds? We could point to Shawn Fain’s hard work, the success of other strikes, including the UAW’s recent strike, and any number of other factors, but instead, we’re just going to let a formerly anti-union worker who changed his mind explain his thought process. In only 13 minutes, he lays out the case for joining a union better than we’ve heard in a long time.

Seriously. Just start the video, sit back, and let this guy give one of the best interviews you’ve ever seen. If Fain doesn’t have this guy speaking to other workers at factories they’re trying to unionize soon, he’ll be seriously missing out.

Not every car is going to be for everyone, and that’s OK. In fact, it’s actually a good thing. This 2015 BMW i8 that’s currently for sale on Cars & Bids definitely isn’t going to make everyone happy, but someone out there is just about to discover their dream car. After all, it’s a mid-engine carbon fiber supercar body with an engine from a Mini, a hybrid system, 15 miles of electric range, only 357 horsepower, no manual transmission and a holographic wrap. That’s not exactly a recipe for mass appeal.

And yet, somehow, the i8 pulls it off, holographic wrap included. If you want a car that’s going to grab attention, buying this one will certainly accomplish that. You can always have it removed if you don’t like it, but if that’s your plan, why not just buy a plain old white i8 that hasn’t been wrapped? Leave this i8 for someone who took one look at the holographic wrap and immediately fell in love.

If this wrap looks familiar to you, that’s probably because Paris Hilton had an i8 with what appears to be the exact same wrap at least as recently as 2020. Her i8 has (had?) different wheels, but we doubt anyone is going to notice or care. Heck, tell ‘em you bought it from your new BFF Paris if you really want to. Just be careful you don’t take your act too far since it’ll be pretty easy for her lawyers to find you. There can’t be that many i8s with a holographic wrap on the road.

Sure, you may not actually be a hotel heiress slash DJ slash model slash musical artist slash whatever else she’s up to these days, but every time you drive your new-to-you i8, you can at least pretend. And to the right person, maybe that’s what matters most.

  • From sedans to SUVs, there's a reasonably priced electric vehicle for everyone

Just a few years ago, your choices for electric vehicles were quite limited, and many were prohibitively expensive. With many automakers accelerating toward full electrification of their fleets, the options have multiplied, and prices have become a bit more reasonable. They’ve also gotten quite good to drive, with more range and faster charging to boot. There are finally enough affordable EVs on the market that we can narrow them down to a list of favorites, so we’ve done just that.

Below are the best EVs you can currently buy for less that $50,000. All prices include destination, which in some cases enough to disqualify an otherwise great vehicle (we’re looking at you, Polestar 2).

    Hyundai Ioniq 5

    Hyundai Ioniq 5

    Base price: $43,175

The Ioniq 5 is an amazing EV. It looks stupendous, features great electric car tech, has tons of utility and is even pretty fun to drive. There are three versions available for under $50,000 including the base SE Standard Range (with 220 miles of range), the $47,225 SE RWD with more horsepower and an impressive 303 miles of range, and the more upscale SEL RWD ($49,775). But you’ll have to skip all the all-wheel-drive offerings to stay under $50,000. While the base trims don’t come with all the creature comforts available, Hyundai is still kind enough to include enough content that you don’t really feel like you’re missing out on some great, important tech. All of Hyundai and Kia’s E-GMP models (which include the next two cars on this list) can take advantage of 350-kW DC fast chargers, keeping charging stops as brief as possible.

Read our full review of the Ioniq 5.

From sedans to SUVs, there's a reasonably priced electric vehicle for everyone

    Kia EV6

    Base price: $43,975

The Kia EV6 does so many things right from a mechanical and tech perspective. It’s the complete package and highly competitive in the EV space. Meanwhile, its eye-turning design alone might be enough to sell you. Mechanically similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, it also offers great range — up to 310 miles with rear-wheel drive. Like the Ioniq 5, adding all-wheel drive will still put you just above $50,000 including destination, but we love the rear-drive dynamics of the EV6.

Read our full review of the Kia EV6.

From sedans to SUVs, there's a reasonably priced electric vehicle for everyone

    Hyundai Ioniq 6

    Base price: $38,650

The Ioniq 6 is the best of the Hyundai/Kia E-GMP platform vehicles to drive, and its aerodynamic shape makes it super efficient. The base SE Standard Range costs less than $40,000 and offers 240 miles of range. The longer-range SE RWD, with its bigger battery, provides a bladder-busting 361 miles on a single charge, at a price of just $43,600. You can upgrade to AWD for $3,500, and still get 316 miles of range. If you want more amenities, the SEL RWD and AWD still start under $50,000. The sedan body style means you give up utility versus the Ioniq 5, but the benefits will be worth it for some.

Read our full review of the Hyundai Ioniq 6.

From sedans to SUVs, there's a reasonably priced electric vehicle for everyone

    Ford Mustang Mach-E

    Base price: $41,890

Ford puts its best foot forward with the Mach-E, combining the idea of a Mustang with the significance of an electric car. It’s capable, interesting and it’s a crossover. And that last part is because crossovers sell, plus they’re practical. For less than $50,000, you can get all-wheel drive, or a rear-wheel drive version equipped with Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology. Also, the Mach-E benefits from a sizable front trunk (frunk) under the hood for extra storage.

Read our full review of the Mustang Mach-E.

    Tesla Model 3 Highland

    Tesla Model 3

    Base price: $40,380

The Model 3 presents quite the value. The base RWD model starts just over $40,000, and offers 272 miles of driving range. Even more impressive, the Model 3 Long Range costs $49,130, gets all-wheel drive, provides 341 miles of range and has a 0-60 time of just 4.2 seconds. Yes, it has some quirks, including too many vehicle functions residing exclusively in infotainment menus, but the Model 3’s idiosyncrasies are easy to forgive based on those figures above, and they’re things you can quickly get used to or possibly even appreciate. No wonder this EV is so popular.

Read our full review of the Tesla Model 3.

From sedans to SUVs, there's a reasonably priced electric vehicle for everyone

    Nissan Ariya

    Base price: $44,555

The Ariya builds on Nissan’s EV expertise gained from building the Leaf for well over a decade now. It has a gorgeous interior, drives like a luxury vehicle with surprising performance from the dual-motor model and is generally priced in line with its competition. For less than $50,000, you’ve got some options. The base model has rear-wheel drive and offers a humble 216 miles of range, but you can get all-wheel drive (and 205 miles of range), or rear-wheel drive with a more respectful 304 miles of range and stay within budget.

  • Los Angeles Is Spending $11 Million On 100 Unproven AI Cameras To Issue Parking Tickets

Artificial intelligence is an intimidating technology that’s held an increasingly influential and still unproven role in our lives, and now Los Angeles is spending $11 million to install 100 AI cameras in buses to ticket vehicles illegally parked in bus zones. Testing for this program is slated to begin this summer and is expected to go live by the end of the year. Los Angeles Metro, the organization that operates LA’s city buses, insists that it is doing community outreach to make sure the public is aware of the purpose, timing, and impacts of the program, but as someone who lives on one of the bus routes slated to get AI cameras, I haven’t heard a peep.

According to LA Metro, once cameras are installed there will be a 60-day warning period for drivers, where any violators caught on camera blocking bus lanes or bus stops will receive warning citations instead of real tickets. This method of notifying the public of the impending crackdowns seems like an intentionally half-hearted approach that will leave most residents without knowledge of the program’s implementation. If LA Metro really wanted to inform residents about the new procedures, it should send an email out to LA residents or a text to warn them that new and more aggressive processes will be implemented.

The program is designed by Hayden AI, a private AI company who is making $11 million from the deal with Los Angeles Metro. Hayden AI claims implementation of its cameras and software will increase ridership, improve bus times, and address mobility concerns. Cameras will be mounted inside Metro bus windshields, and will constantly scan for illegally parked cars, but according to Hayden AI’s chief growth officer Charles Territo, it will only record when a potential violation is observed. According to the Los Angeles Times,

“If the bus is moving and there’s no vehicle parked in the lane, it’s not recording any data,” (Territo) said. “Only when the system observes a vehicle parked illegally in a bus lane or a bus stop does it record the license plate and capture video of the event.”

Once a recording is made, it will be submitted to L.A. Department of Transportation where a human will assess whether a ticket should be issued.

The use of video imaging to enforce parking violations was legalized in 2021. Video that does not include a parking violation must be destroyed within 15 days, the law states. Any recording of a parking violation can be retained for six months, or 60 days “after the final disposition of the citation.”

LA Metro’s $11 million contract with Hayden AI started in December of 2023 and is supposed to last about five years. When vehicles block bus stops, it creates accessibility issues for riders with disabilities, and vehicles blocking bus lanes slow service. Addressing these violations should help to streamline LA’s notoriously underdeveloped public transportation system which is a good thing, but LA Metro should make a more concerted effort to inform the public of the new methods of enforcement.

Airline Passenger Spots Possible UFO Over LaGuardia In NYC

A still image of the "flying cylinder" that Michelle Reyes saw outside of the plane

    Looks pretty drone-like to me.
    Screenshot: NewsNation

“If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.” The evocative lyrics of “New York, New York” have been more applicable than on Wednesday. An airplane passenger recorded video of a possible UFO over LaGuardia Airport, a drop in the surreal bucket that is America’s largest city. Within the past year, wildfire smoke from Canada engulfed the Big Apple, the Governor deployed a military presence into the subway and a minor earthquake struck the city. I just want some peace to enjoy a slice of pizza and shout, “I’m walking here!” at tourists. Is that so much to ask?

Caught on camera: Possible UFO reported over New York’s LaGuardia Airport | Banfield

Michelle Reyes told NewsNation that she spotted a flying cylinder moving at a high speed while looking out of the window of the plane. The cable news channel also invited Ben Hansen, a TV host and self-proclaimed UFO investigator, to lend credibility to Reyes’ account and verify that the video wasn’t faked. I completely believe that the video is real. However, I have to mention that visual speed is relative. The plane could have just been… you know, flying… while the unidentified object was moving at a much slower speed, like a drone.

Now, I don’t have any evidence that it wasn’t an object of extraterrestrial origin so aliens might be real. That’s how this works, right? The Federal Aviation Administration hasn’t addressed the incident. Reyes told NewsNation, “The first thing I did was email the FAA to let them know what I saw. Maybe it was a safety hazard, but unfortunately, they didn’t acknowledge my email,” I don’t know specifically why the FAA didn’t respond to Reyes’ email. Still, its plate seems pretty full at the moment, considering that the USDOT told every airline yesterday to kick rocks and automatically give passengers refunds.

If the UFO were actually a drone, it would be a dangerous situation that authorities would need to address. In 2018, a drone was deliberately used to disrupt operations at Gatwick Airport outside of London. Over 750 flights were either canceled or delayed. I don’t care about most things that happen around New York, but we’re going to have to talk if you personally impact my travel.
