A few months ago we shared spy photos of the new Kia Tasman, the brand’s first pickup truck. Designed primarily for Australia, Africa and the Middle East to do battle with trucks like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, the midsize body-on-frame Tasman is rapidly approaching its debut, and Kia just released the first official teaser image. Despite the wrap designed by New Zealand–based artist Richard Boyd-Dunlop, we can see the Tasman will have the strangest styling of any pickup on sale — and I think that’s a good thing.

The Tasman has super blocky, upright proportions with a blunt face that reminds me of a hippo. Small headlight pods are pushed to the corners, and there’s a snout-like grille opening above a prominent bumper. The headlights flow into black plastic boxed fender flares that look pretty cool, and the Tasman has chunky all-terrain tires.

We can also see a kicked-up C-pillar, some nice crisp surfacing lines along the sides, steps set into the rear bumper, and taillights that protrude from the rear corners. Overall it’s a distinctive thing so far, certainly not just a rehash of any existing trucks. Kia has been taking extremely bold styling risks with new cars like the EV6, EV9 and K4, and the risks have paid off — 2023 was the brand’s best sales year ever. If Kia really wants to compete in such a competitive market, it needs to stand out, and it seems like the Tasman will do exactly that.

Still, we don’t know many details about the Tasman’s mechanicals or powertrains, which are obviously of huge importance to truck buyers. Previous reports have said the Tasman will get a turbodiesel 2.2-liter engine with an automatic or a manual, and it could get Kia’s twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6, too. This is what Kia’s press release had to say about the Tasman’s positioning:

Suitable for a demanding 24/7 lifestyle, Kia’s versatile truck will support even the most extreme leisure activities.

Despite the truck looking basically ready, Kia says the Tasman won’t debut until 2025. Tasman prototypes have been spotted testing in the U.S., and while that doesn’t necessarily mean the truck will be sold here, Kia has previously talked about developing trucks for the U.S. market, and strong rumors have pointed to the Tasman being offered in America. As long as Kia nails the truck stuff, the combo of the brand’s quirky design and excellent value could make it a winner.

Tesla on Tuesday revealed an updated Model 3 Performance, which joins the rest of the refreshed Model 3 lineup, codenamed Highland.

The dual-motor all-wheel drive Model 3 Performance boasts 510 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque, which Tesla says will get it from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 163 mph. Range is estimated at 296 miles, compared to 341 miles for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive, the current range champ of the Model 3 lineup.

Fourth-generation drive units deliver more consistent performance with a 22% increase in continuous power output, a 32% increase in peak power output, and a 16% increase in peak torque, according to Tesla. Energy consumption is said to be lower than that of the previous Model 3 Performance.

The updated Model 3 Performance also gets adaptive damping and 20-inch forged and staggered wheels with Pirelli P Zero 4 tires. Tesla claims to have improved Track Mode with motor and suspension controls, powertrain cooling controls, and the car’s vehicle dynamics controller now working together seamlessly.

The Model 3 Performance gets similar styling to other refreshed Model 3 variants. Tesla claims a 5% reduction in drag, a 36% lift reduction, and a 55% improvement in front/rear lift balance compared to the previous Model 3 Performance. Inside, Performance models get new sport seats on top of the interior changes from the rest of the lineup, which include a larger horizontal touchscreen and the elimination of control stalks.

Pricing starts at $52,990 before destination, making the Performance the most expensive Model 3. The Long Range All-Wheel Drive starts at $47,740, while the base Rear-Wheel Drive starts at $38,990. The Model 3 Performance is available to order now, and it’s likely the Tesla Model Y crossover will get similar updates soon as well.

Taking your car in for service is always a pain. It’s even worse when the dealer needs to keep your car, and hands you a loaner — sure, it gets you to work and back, but you need to re-pair your phone and re-save all your radio stations. Worst of all, though, is when the dealer mistakenly reports that loaner as stolen and you’re swarmed by a dozen armed cops, all threatening to fire on you.

That’s what happened to Jamie Rodgers, who brought his car in to Car Pros Kia Hunting Beach in California back in 2021. The dealer gave him a Kia Sportage loaner, then reported it stolen. The Orange County Register has the story:

Rodgers, the 39-year-old father of two small children, finally pulled over, still thinking that maybe the police were after some criminal hiding in the brush along the freeway. But looking through his rear-view mirror, he noticed the police cars had stopped and about a dozen officers were out, pointing their service weapons and rifles in his direction.

Then came the words through a police loudspeaker: “You are considered armed and dangerous. Do exactly as I say or you could be shot.”

As it turned out, Rodgers was driving a loaner vehicle that Car Pros Kia Huntington Beach had mistakenly reported stolen. The report caught the attention of the Orange County Auto Theft Task Force, which traced the vehicle to Rodgers’ home in Costa Mesa and had it under surveillance all morning.

A deputy told him to pull his shirt up over his head so police could see his waistband. They made him walk backward to them. Slowly. They they took him to the ground, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol car, without explaining why he was being detained.

Officers finally sorted it out. Rodgers had been driving the loaner 2019 Kia Sportage for about two months while his own vehicle was undergoing extensive repairs at the dealership. Rodgers said the dealer had misplaced the loaner contract — apparently it had fallen behind a file cabinet. The dealer received a bill for unpaid tolls, couldn’t find the contract and assumed it must have been stolen, Rodgers said.

Rodgers is now suing the dealership, claiming post-traumatic stress disorder that’s sparked by the presence of police. I, for one, certainly believe that being tackled to the ground by a dozen armed cops threatening your life would be a traumatizing experience.

When it comes to buying a new car, agreeing on a price you’re happy with is really only the first step. Even after you learn what your monthly payment will be, you’ll have more expenses to consider, like insurance, gasoline, and maintenance. Odds are, you could run the numbers yourself and come up with a pretty good estimate of what it will really cost to own that new car you’ve had your eye on. Or, you could just let this YouTube channel we found do most of the work for you.

Maie Haven’s channel is still pretty small, but it’s essentially entirely dedicated to calculating an estimated cost to own for any given vehicle. For example, let’s take the Chevrolet Tahoe Z71. The basic 5.3-liter V8 version has an MSRP of $68,295. Add in the $1,995 destination charge and about $5,600 in sales tax, and you’re probably looking at a total of about $76,000 just to get the keys to a Tahoe Z71.

A 10 percent downpayment would be about $7,600, and if you figure you’ll pay about 8.0 percent interest over 72 months, you’re looking at a monthly payment of $1,200 or so. Over six years, that interest will add up to about $18,000. Then, if you add in about $175 a month for insurance, between $250 and $275 a month for gas and a $75-ish monthly maintenance budget to make sure you’re prepared for when something breaks, that brings your monthly cost to own up to a little more than $1,700.

If you figure that 15 percent of your yearly income is a responsible amount to spend on transportation every month, that would mean you’d need to make more than $137,000 annually to afford that Z71 you’ve been looking at. Over the course of the 72 month loan, though, you’d end up paying more than $131,000 for the privilege of driving that $68,000 Tahoe.

Of course, everyone’s individual situation is different. Maybe you know you can get a slightly better interest rate and could afford the payments on a three-year loan. Maybe your mechanic buddy owes you for saving his life and has promised to work on your cars for free. Heck, maybe you’re the world’s best negotiator and know you won’t be paying MSRP. If that’s the case, good for you.

Not every estimate is ever going to be perfect, but this channel appears to be a great way to spend a couple of minutes getting a rough picture of what that new car would really cost to own. If $131,000 to drive a Tahoe Z71 for six years feels reasonable to you, go for it. If that sounds a little too rich for your blood, at least you’ll figure that out now instead of six years from now, after you’ve already paid it off.

A Honda NSX that belonged to legendary Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna has surfaced for sale on Auto Trader.

Cars with such pedigree are typically sold through the major auction houses, but the car’s current owner, Robert McFagan, wanted to sell it via the popular British classifieds website. It’s listed with a sale price of 500,000 British pounds (approximately $622,000). That’s quite a markup for some ownership provenance, as similar NSXs go for less than $100,000.

McFagan said he picked up the car in 2013 during a trip to Portugal’s Algarve region. The car is one of three examples of the original NSX driven regularly by Senna. It was first registered in 1991 and used by the triple world champion when he was in Portugal. Senna, whose McLaren F1 team at the time was using Honda power units, also drove two additional examples of the NSX. They were both black. One was in Brazil and the other was also in Portugal.

Senna was regularly spotted with the red NSX when he was in Portugal, and the car also featured in the 1992 Senna documentary “Racing is in my Blood.” It has just 39,100 miles on the clock, and McFagan is thought to be only the second owner.

The original NSX, which like the last NSX was marketed in the U.S. as an Acura, has a deeper connection with Senna than just his company car. During the development, Honda turned inward to its motorsports program for tuning strategies. Senna was part of that program and lent many hours of his time so the NSX would become the fantastic driving machine it proved to be.

He convinced the engineers to further stiffen the chassis, relayed his feedback with regard to the suspension tuning, and pushed the car hard at a number of tracks, including the Nürburgring. It’s safe to say, Senna is part of the reason why the original NSX was so good.
