If you feel like you’re constantly blinded while driving at night now, you’re not alone, and it’s not just because a bunch of truck bros ordered aftermarket LED headlights off Amazon that they installed themselves. There is certainly some of that, along with assholes driving with their brights on the whole time, but headlights really have gotten more blinding in recent years. The good news is, as the video below explains, there are a few things you can do to make night driving a little less miserable.

As Cory Boone, an optical engineer explains, you’re already at a disadvantage when you drive at night because your pupils dilate to let in more light. That’s good for being able to see better in the dark, but it also exacerbates any sight issues you might have such as nearsightedness or astigmatism. It also messes with your sense of focus. There’s also no denying the fact that high-riding vehicles such as trucks and large SUVs have their headlights mounted further from the ground, making them more likely to blind other drivers.

Part of the problem is also the headlights themselves. While older headlight designs cast a yellowish light, modern LED headlights are much more white or blue. Even if they’re technically no brighter than the old headlights, your eyes interpret white and blue light as brighter or harsher than yellow light. The shorter wavelength of those blue lights also scatters around inside your eyeballs as much as 16 times more than a longer wavelength color such as red. That’s part of why you see lines coming off of other drivers’ lights while you’re driving at night.

Ultimately, we need regulations to change to allow more advanced headlights that aren’t as blinding, but in the meantime, Boone says there are a couple of things you can do to try to minimize nighttime glare. The first is to wash your windshield frequently because dirt and other gunk on the windshield causes light to scatter even more than it would have otherwise. If you wear glasses, the same is true for keeping your lenses clean. You should also make sure your glasses have an anti-reflective coating on them, which costs more, but if it reduces glare, it’s probably worth it.

Another option is to try increasing the brightness of your dashboard lights. That should cause your pupils to constrict, which should somewhat improve your night vision. He also recommends taking supplements such as lutein and zeaxanthin to improve eye health.

One of the most effective actions you can potentially take might be the most annoying — If you use glasses or contacts, make sure you get your eyes checked on a yearly basis to ensure that your prescription is up to date. Another company has surfaced with an electric conversion for the original Defender, but there’s a difference this time.

U.K.-based Bedeo’s electric Defender uses in-wheel motors, which Bedeo has packaged as a retrofit kit that could potentially be used on any classic car.

Bedeo specializes in adding electric powertrains to light commercial vehicles, but the company plans to expand into classic cars through a new Reborn Electric: Icons program. The Defender is just the first conversion.

The in-wheel motors come from fellow British company Protean, which was acquired in 2019 by Swedish EV startup NEVS and sold to Bedeo in 2021 after NEVS ran into cash troubles. Chinese automaker Dongfeng has previously used Protean motors for its Fengshen E70 sedan. Former EV startup Lordstown also used in-wheel motors in its Endurance pickup truck, though these were sourced from a company called Elaphe.

In Bedeo’s electric Defender, four in-wheel motors are used for a combined output of 483 hp, which is considerably higher than what most early Defenders could muster. Bedeo also installs its own 75-kwh battery pack, resulting in a range estimate of 153 miles on the WLTP cycle used overseas. A lower range figure would result using the stricter EPA cycle.

Bedeo claims it’s committed to matching the original curb weight and driving dynamics with each of these builds, achieved in part through weight savings brought about by the use in-wheel motors. In addition to ditching the internal-combustion engine and its associated hardware, the use of in-wheel motors also eliminates the need for things like a transmission and driveshafts.

There are downsides to the technology, though. In-wheel motors face direct exposure to road debris, saltwater, and various fluids, along with vibrations and shocks, all of which can reduce their lifespan.

Bedeo hasn’t listed a price for its electric Defender.

There are plenty of automotive enthusiasts who will completely disregard a car they love if it has a few flaws. but only a sucker would buy a car with a salvage title or with previous crash damage, no matter how good the repairs. I am nothing if not a sucker, and this gorgeous Fly Yellow Aston Martin DB7 Volante is really making me think about putting up a bid. It would be damn near impossible to find another one, in spite of its branded title and minor passenger side damage. This bad boy is coming up for auction on Copart from a yard in Knoxville, Tennessee. and if you outbid me, it could be yours.

I have been somewhat passively seeking a V12 automatic convertible DB7 for a couple of years now, as the prices continue to trend downward. While the manual coupes have already started to balloon upward, nobody seems to want the convertibles or the automatics. I want one specifically because it would be nice to have a long-legged grand tourer to take out on weekends. Besides, the V12 is basically a pair of Ford V6s bolted together, so how bad could the maintenance possibly be?

New for 1999, the V12 Vantage featured a 5.9-liter 48-valve V12 making 420 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The automatic in use here is a ZF-built 5HP30 five-speed, which was also used in thousands of BMWs, Bentleys, and Rolls-Royces through the 1990s and early 2000s (a four-wheel drive version was used by Audi and Volkswagen V8 and W12 vehicles through 2011). It could hit a top speed of 186 miles per hour, and sprinted from 0-60 in an unhurried 4.9 seconds. The new V12 was so successful that it completely derailed sales of the base model DB7 with a supercharged inline six.

There’s no mention in the listing of what happened to the car for it to end up here. The dash currently displays just 46,255 miles on the clock. About 10,o00 miles ago the car was listed for sale in California, and after that it was in North Carolina for a while, where it sold at auction twice in 2016 and 2018.

Copart says the car has a branded title, but doesn’t say what the cause was. The damage to the right side looks minor, but could be hiding something bigger, and the interior is somewhat dismantled, though all of the parts seem to be included in the sale. It is a “run & drive” vehicle, but the listing has absolutely no notes from the seller, which is concerning.

With values of driver-grade DB7 Vantage Volantes somewhere around the low 30,000s, it would certainly be a risk to bid on this one, but maybe a risk worth taking. If you lose you could be facing some big repair bills, but either way you end up with a big V12 in a luxury convertible. If that’s wrong, I don’t want to be right. A little spit shine and this car could be damn near perfect.

Axon’s triangular aperture logo has quickly become a ubiquitous mark on the top right corner of police footage, but the company wants to amplify its role in policing. On Tuesday, the inventors of the Taser launched Draft One, generative AI software intended to transcribe camera audio into police report narratives.

Axon touts Draft One as a tool to reduce gun deaths in police interactions, like when plainclothed Chicago police fired 96 shots at a driver over a seat-beat violation. Allowing AI to play a direct role in criminal justice seems like a recipe for disaster, considering the blunders AI caused for airlines and dealerships.

Axon, previously known as TASER International, created its namesake non-lethal weapon and brought the Taser to market in the 1990s in the form we recognize today. The company prioritized developing body-worn cameras in the 2000s, introducing its first in 2008. Axon now dominates the police department market for body and vehicle cameras.

Axon claims Draft One is essentially a fix-all for police departments across the country. The manufacturer believes that the average officer spends 15 hours per week doing paper and departments are understaffed, resulting in increased response times. Axon states:

“Draft One is the latest giant leap toward Axon’s moonshot goal to reduce gun-related deaths between police and the public. Axon developed Draft One to positively impact the trajectory of what officers can achieve, allowing them to reclaim time for more meaningful and impactful work, such as investigations, patrol, training, wellness and rest.”

It’s extremely difficult to believe that AI-written police reports will lead to fewer deaths. The notice heavily leans on the philosophy that more police leads to safer communities. Hypothetically, Draft One would ideally lead to more police interactions and more bodycam footage that would be transcribed by Draft One. Axon promises that there are safeguards in place to prevent the AI from fabricating facts. However, the primary measure is requiring a police officer to approve Draft One’s report.

If you want a job done right, even paperwork, you have to do it yourself. AI has been shown to be easily manipulated in multiple instances, including when a Chevrolet dealership’s chatbot sold a Tahoe for $1. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone could convince an AI that a driver was resisting arrest when telling an officer that he wasn’t speeding.
