    Ford Q1 earnings top expectations, sees full-year profit 'tracking to high-end'

     

    Ford (F) reported first quarter results after the bell that beat expectations on Wednesday, with its changing product game plan front and center along with its focus on gas and hybrid offerings. Ford also boosted some guidance metrics, but not its full-year profit outlook.

    For the quarter, Ford reported revenue of $42.8 billion, beating estimates of $40.04 billion, and up 3% compared to a year ago. Ford posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.63 topping forecasts of $0.42, with adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) coming in at $2.8 billion, compared to estimates of $2.54 billion. Ford’s results were better than those in Q4, when it was dealing with the lingering effects of the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike.

    Ford said full-year adjusted EBIT was “tracking to high end of $10 billion to $12 billion,” though it raised its adjusted FCF target raised to $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion, with CAPEX guidance tightened to $8 billion to $9 billion. Previously had projected adjusted EBIT of $10 billion to $12 billion, adjusted free cash flow of $6 billion to $7 billion, and capital expenditures of $8 billion to $9.5 billion.

    Ford shares were pulling higher in after hours trading, up over 3%. Ford’s results come after GM reported strong Q1 results and boosted its yearly profit outlook.

    “Customers want vehicles that they’re passionate about, choices in how they’re powered, quality that’s constantly getting better and great value,“ Ford President and CEO Jim Farley said in a statement. “With Ford+, we’re increasingly giving them all those things in ways that others don’t and creating a company that will lead for the long haul.”

    Last year Ford divided its business into three units: Ford Blue, for traditional gas-powered autos; Ford Model e, for the EV division; and Ford Pro, for its commercial and super duty truck business. Here’s the breakdown for Q1: 

    • Ford Blue: $21.8 billion in revenue, EBIT of $905 million

    • Model e: $100 million in revenue, EBIT loss of $1.32 billion

    • Ford Pro: $18.0 billion in revenue, EBIT of $3.01 billion

    During the first quarter, Ford pushed deeper into its gas and hybrid vehicles, with EV spending and production taking a back seat. Earlier this month, Ford said that it is pushing back EV production at its massive BlueOval City EV campus in Tennessee to 2026 from its initial 2025 start date. Ford also revealed it is “retiming” the launch of upcoming EVs at its plant in Oakville, Ontario, where it plans to build next-generation three-row EVs, and most likely a full-size SUV. The company is aiming to launch those vehicles in 2027, pushing back the original 2025 timeline.

    Ford also said earlier in the quarter it would add a third shift to boost production of its Bronco SUV and midsize ranger pickup to meet customer demand. Meanwhile, Ford is focusing on its hybrid offerings, like the Maverick pickup and brand new F-150 with hybrid powertrain.

    This was reflected in Ford’s Q1 US deliveries which jumped 6.8% to 508,083 vehicles, powered by strong sales of electrified products such as hybrids. Ford’s Maverick hybrid pickup saw its best quarter ever, with sales jumping 77% in the first quarter. Maverick also powered overall hybrid sales to a 42% jump to 38,421, with Ford claiming this was also the best quarter for hybrids and that momentum will continue.

    Even Ford’s EV offerings — the Mustang Mach-E, Ford Lightning EV, and its commercial E-Transit vans —bucked the recent trend of softening demand. Ford’s overall EV portfolio saw a massive 82% jump to 20,223 EVs sold in Q1, with the Mustang Mach-E jumping 77.3% to 9,589 units sold and the Lightning pickup seeing sales surge 80.4% to 7,743 units. While the sales numbers here are strong, Ford relied on heavy discounting, cheap financing rates, and lease deals to move inventory.

    A down note for Ford, however, was its flagship F-150 sales. Though the F-Series (which includes the F-150 and heavy-duty F-250 and F-350 offerings) retained the crown of America’s top-selling truck, sales fell 10.2% in the quarter to 152,943 units. Ford has experienced a slow ramp-up of the all-new F-150, which started sales in March.

    The Department of Transportation announced a final rule mandating that airlines automatically give cash refunds to passengers and inform passengers of their right to a refund on Wednesday. The policy change highlights the Biden Administration’s continued hardline support of consumer rights in the skies. The USDOT forced airlines to pay out over $600 million in refunds in 2022. The agency also levied a record $140 million fine against Southwest for its 2022 holiday season meltdown.

    The final rule requires any airline to provide an automatic refund for canceled or significantly changed flights within seven days for credit card payments and within 20 days for other forms of payment. This stipulation also applies to checked bag fees and charges for ancillary services like inflight WiFi.

    It’s important to note that the refund is only required if the passenger rejects or isn’t offered alternative transportation or compensation, like credits for another flight. Airlines have to inform customers of their right to a refund, but people wanting refunds will have to be knowledgeable enough to turn down alternatives.

    For clarity, the USDOT defines a significant change as:
    a three-hour delay (or early departure) on domestic flights
    a six-hour delay (or early departure) on international flights
    a change of departure or arrival airport on an itinerary
    the addition of connection points on an itinerary
    a downgrade to a lower class of service
    a change in connection airports for passengers with a disability
    a substitution of aircraft that makes an accessibility feature unavailable for passengers with a disability

    Transportation Security Pete Buttigieg said in a release, “Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them – without headaches or haggling. Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”

    It’s no secret that refunds significantly eat into the profits of airlines. Delta Air Lines issued $6 billion in refunds between January 2020 and August 2022. Measures that force carriers to give out cash compensation also create an incentive for better service with fewer delays and cancellations.

    If you feel like you’re constantly blinded while driving at night now, you’re not alone, and it’s not just because a bunch of truck bros ordered aftermarket LED headlights off Amazon that they installed themselves. There is certainly some of that, along with assholes driving with their brights on the whole time, but headlights really have gotten more blinding in recent years. The good news is, as the video below explains, there are a few things you can do to make night driving a little less miserable.

    As Cory Boone, an optical engineer explains, you’re already at a disadvantage when you drive at night because your pupils dilate to let in more light. That’s good for being able to see better in the dark, but it also exacerbates any sight issues you might have such as nearsightedness or astigmatism. It also messes with your sense of focus. There’s also no denying the fact that high-riding vehicles such as trucks and large SUVs have their headlights mounted further from the ground, making them more likely to blind other drivers.

    Part of the problem is also the headlights themselves. While older headlight designs cast a yellowish light, modern LED headlights are much more white or blue. Even if they’re technically no brighter than the old headlights, your eyes interpret white and blue light as brighter or harsher than yellow light. The shorter wavelength of those blue lights also scatters around inside your eyeballs as much as 16 times more than a longer wavelength color such as red. That’s part of why you see lines coming off of other drivers’ lights while you’re driving at night.

    Ultimately, we need regulations to change to allow more advanced headlights that aren’t as blinding, but in the meantime, Boone says there are a couple of things you can do to try to minimize nighttime glare. The first is to wash your windshield frequently because dirt and other gunk on the windshield causes light to scatter even more than it would have otherwise. If you wear glasses, the same is true for keeping your lenses clean. You should also make sure your glasses have an anti-reflective coating on them, which costs more, but if it reduces glare, it’s probably worth it.

    Another option is to try increasing the brightness of your dashboard lights. That should cause your pupils to constrict, which should somewhat improve your night vision. He also recommends taking supplements such as lutein and zeaxanthin to improve eye health.

    One of the most effective actions you can potentially take might be the most annoying — If you use glasses or contacts, make sure you get your eyes checked on a yearly basis to ensure that your prescription is up to date. You might not feel like you need new glasses, but if Biden wasn’t president the last time you had an eye exam, your issues with night driving could potentially be improved with new lenses. Especially if you can get ones with the aforementioned anti-reflective coating on them.

    Sadly, it’s unlikely that a clean windshield, new glasses and a slightly brighter dashboard will completely eliminate the glare from other people’s headlights, but at the very least you can try a few of these tips out and see if they help.
