Costco is known for its massive warehouses full of bulk consumer products and well-priced appliances, but nestled between discounted 24-packs of paper towel and giant boxes of trail mix, you’ll find something even better; cars.

Costco members are eligible for discounts on new cars, which is great considering how freaking expensive the damn things are these days. This month, Costco is offering up to $2,000 off the purchase or lease of a new Polestar 2, and $1,000 off the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Lyric, and most new Volvo models. All of these deals are valid from May 1 through July 31, 2024, and to take advantage of the discounts, folks must have been a Costco member prior to April 30, 2024 so if you’re hoping to sign up for a Costco membership for these deals you’re out of luck.

Here’s how these discounts work: Costco members must register for the discounts online or through Costco’s call center by July 31. Once registered, buyers will receive a certificate with the promotion code that can be taken to any OEM dealership where it will be honored. These Costco member discounts don’t nullify other dealer incentives that the buyer qualifies for, so it’s literally a coupon that saves you an immediate $1,000 or $2,000 off the price of a new qualifying car.

The General Motors deals have fine print that says “take in-stock delivery by July 31,” so that likely means no special order vehicles will be eligible. The Volvo deal’s fine print says “take delivery by July 31,” so the deal should be able to be applied to special orders. The Polestar deal fine print says the order must be placed before July 31, so special order vehicles should qualify here, too. The Volvo deal also applies to retired demonstrator vehicles and prior service loan vehicles, so you may be able to get a screaming deal on a nearly new Volvo. As always, if you’re looking to take advantage of these discounts, make sure to speak with a Costco representative to confirm the terms and conditions.

The list of Volvo models eligible for the $1,000 discount is extensive, and includes new 2024 or 2025 Volvo XC40s, XC60s, and XC60 PHEVs, XC90s and XC90 PHEVs, as well as new 2024 XC40 Recharge models, and C40 Recharge models. All of the eligible GM models, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq, are also eligible for the full $7,500 federal EV incentive, so Costco members can feasibly get $8,500 off the price of an eligible GM EV, which is significant.

Good deals are more important than ever now that car prices and all other prices have skyrocketed and most Americans wages unfortunately haven’t skyrocketed in parallel. If you’re in the market for a new car and you’re a Costco member, these discounts might help you pick your new car.

NORWALK, Conn. — A tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Connecticut, closing the East Coast’s main north-south highway Thursday and causing major traffic jams.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said there were no serious injuries in the 5:30 a.m. accident. But the highway was expected to be closed for much of the day.

Text alerts were sent to residents of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey and trucking companies were notified to find alternative routes and means of travel, he said. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has also been notified.

“I know what an incredible inconvenience this is for people and all I can ask you to do is stay away from that area as best you can,” Lamont said during a briefing in Hartford. “The traffic jams are horrendous.”

Traffic was backed up for dozens of miles during the morning rush hour and the crash left other highways and secondary roads in gridlock. The major alternate route in the area, the Merritt Parkway, cannot be used by trucks because the underpasses on that highway are too low.

The accident was reminiscent of last year’s deadly accident in Philadelphia along I-95 when a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline lost control and caught fire, destroying a section of the highway.

Thursday’s accident occurred under a bridge. The overpass has been damaged but appeared to be “stable and safe,” said Scott Hill, chief engineer for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Engineers were still waiting at noon to access the scene and assess the full extent of the damage with the goal of getting the highway reopened as quickly as possible.

“As you know, there has been several other incidents around the state and elsewhere where when a tanker truck caught fire underneath the bridge, the bridge ultimately had to be replaced,” Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said. “Hopefully that will be the case here.”

Utility crews were working to replace downed wires and crews also needed to offload about 3,000 gallons (about 11,400 liters) of gasoline that remained on the tanker, which was carrying a load of about 8,500 gallons (about 32,000 liters) when it crashed, officials said.

“Gasoline can really heat up and heat the bridge up and cause the steel to deform,” he said. “Once we figure out everything that’s associated with the safety of the traveling public and what we can and can’t do, we’ll get more updates to you.”

Environmental crews were also working to clean up gasoline and firefighting foam that ran off into the Norwalk River, officials said.

The crash came just over a year after a similar wreck on Interstate 95 in Connecticut that forced the closure of the highway.

In April 2023, another fuel truck caught fire after colliding with a stopped car on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge between New London and Groton. The fuel truck driver was killed. The crash shut down the southbound side of the bridge for hours, while the northbound side was closed briefly. The driver of the car was recently charged with negligent homicide.

There are hundreds if not thousands of accessories you can buy for your Jeep Wrangler. Many of them are super ill-advised, but one may stand (or sit) above the rest: a bolt-in third-row seat. That’s right, you can – theoretically – buy an aftermarket third-row bench seat to cram two more people into your Wrangler.

I say theoretically because the company that built these bolt-in rear seats, called “Little Passenger Seats” is now very much out of business. This is probably a good thing. If your first thought after seeing this was, “Wow, that can’t be safe” you hit the nail on the head. After a little bit of Googling, you’ll quickly find out that back in 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration actually posted a “Do Not Use or Purchase” bulletin on its website regarding the seats.

Here’s what NHTSA had to say about the Little Passenger Seat back during the height of the COVID pandemic:

The bench seats are not certified as meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which specify minimum safety performance requirements for motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment.

Motorists who own the seat should stop using it immediately. This warning is especially important because the seats are frequently used by children.

The company is no longer in business, according to the Better Business Bureau. The bench was advertised as a custom third- and fourth-row seat for more than 70 SUVs and other vehicles. These uncertified benches may still be purchased online and are sometimes wrongly described as safe and approved for use.

So, these seats were available in a wide range of vehicles, but from some research, it seems like the most common application was indeed in the back of Jeep Wranglers. Owners could decide to either have the seats facing forward or backward depending on how motion-sick they wanted to make the third-row passengers before their death. From what I can tell, these seats were pretty much just bolted on using two L-brackets, which cannot be enough to stop them from coming undone in a crash. Yikes.

While it is undeniably a good thing that this company is very much defunct, these seats are still floating around out there. As I scrolled through Facebook marketplace – as I am want to do – I saw these seats listed for $1,000 on the website. I won’t blow up the guy’s spot, but he said that the seats came with a JK Wrangler Unlimited he recently bought but he doesn’t want them. He even goes so far as to mention the company is out of business but neglects to actually say NHTSA deemed them extremely unsafe. Kind of a jerk move if you ask me.

As it turns out, even Jay Leno thought the Little Passenger Seat was the tits nine years ago. To be fair to Jay and the whole Garage, this is still six years before NHTSA dropped the “do not purchase” bulletin. Still, these little guys had a good run, didn’t they?

Anyway, if you see Little Passenger Seats for sale on your local Facebook Marketplace, maybe don’t buy them unless you’d like to see the untimely death of your very own little passengers. Just a thought.

I currently have a 2 seat sports car, but need a daily driver. Looking for something fun but with 4 doors and not too expensive. Wanted a V6 but will settle for a 4 cylinder. Absolutely do not want a CVT, a manual would be good if available. Definately something dependable and budget between 20-30k, used is fine.

You are looking for a sporty-ish four-door that is low-stress in terms of running costs. Despite the Miata mania that is typically found on this website, the real “answer” for most people just looking for a solid car that checks a lot of boxes is the Mazda6. I still stand by my argument, that the Mazda6 is the best luxury sport sedan without a luxury badge. Your desire for a V6 indicates you probably want a bit more power than most base model mid-sizes offer, and while the Mazda6 doesn’t have a six-cylinder option, you can get it equipped with 2.5-liter turbocharged four that pumps out 250 hp and 310 lb-ft. The interior of these sedans can rival more expensive European options, and they will be packed with all the safety gizmos and tech you could want for a daily commute.

You will want to avoid the Touring and Sport trims, as they only have the base motor, but the higher trims aren’t difficult to find with turbo power.

Here is a 2021 Carbon edition, (you may or may not dig the red seats) with about 23,000 for about $27,500. The Mazda6 has just enough style to fit right in at a dealership that is mostly stocked with Maseratis.

Expert 2: Collin Woodard – Feel The Sting

The Mazda6 is a solid choice, Gustavo, but I think we can do a little better while also getting you that V6 you’re looking for and even more practicality. I’m talking, of course, about the Kia Stinger. It’s not as sporty or quite as luxurious as the BMW 430i Gran Coupe or Audi S5 Sportback that a lot of people like to compare it to, but it’s also bigger. I’d argue it’s more of a thinking man’s Dodge Charger than anything else, and it does that job very well.

You won’t be able to get a manual since Kia only ever offered the Stinger with an automatic, but at least it’s not a CVT. And as more of a grand tourer than a true, focused sport sedan, it’ll make a fantastic daily driver that’s still plenty of fun when you want it to be. Especially if you get one of the rear-wheel-drive Stingers that are more than happy to hang their tails out if you ask them to.

Less-powerful four-cylinder models are definitely available in your price range, but the V6 version you actually want tends to be a bit more. If you can stretch your budget just a bit, this 33,000-mile 2018 Kia Stinger GT2 is loaded with options and appears to be a good deal but is also about $2,000 more than you were looking to spend. Alternatively, this 62,000-mile 2019 Kia Stinger GT lacks the GT2’s features and has more miles but compensates with a much lower $23,000 asking price.

Sure, it’s a Kia, and the dealership experience varies depending on where you go, but give the Stinger a test drive, and I guarantee you’ll be surprised by how enjoyable it is to drive and how much you get for your money. It might be a little bit of a risk, but there’s a reason the Stinger has a 4/5 Ownership Satisfaction score over at Consumer Reports.

Expert 3: Owen Bellwood – Somewhat Fun

Gustavo you seem like a person of exquisite taste, so whatever car you’re putting alongside your two-seater has to be of a pretty high standard. And while I’ll agree with Collin that the Kia would be a great choice, I think you can do better.

That’s why I’ve picked out this wonderful Mitsubishi for you, and I think it ticks all your boxes.

First, it’s a chance to own a genuine bedroom-poster car, and what’s better than that? Then there’s all the fun you’ll have in an all-wheel-drive, sports sedan that packs a turbocharged engine and a five-speed manual. Think of the hoot you’ll have hooning this thing around town, and even though you craved a V6 I don’t think that this four-cylinder motor will leave you wishing for much more.

Then, there’s that slick rally-inspired styling on the outside, the crisp black leather interior and the cudos that comes with daily driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Gustavo, make the right choice.

Expert 4: Andy Kalmowitz – Super Roo

What’s up Big G? How’s it goin’? You good? Glad to hear it. Anyway, I am a big fan of everyone above me, but they’re all dead wrong. Buddy, what you need is a VB Subaru WRX. No car on this earth is more tailor-made for exactly what you’re looking for. It’s a wonderful daily, fun enough to drive, reliable, has four doors (!!!), and most importantly does not have a CVT if you don’t want it.

Another unintended plus of having a Subaru WRX? Boxer engines, babe. We already know you like those, you Porsche fan, you. So, why not continue the flat-engined theme in your daily? What an engine it is, too. The 2.4-liter turbo four pumps out 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That may be a bit less powerful than some of your other options, but dude, this is a Subaru. You can tune and upgrade it to your heart’s content.

Anyway, there are at least a couple dozen current-generation WRXs in your budget within a few hundred miles of Houston. That means there are plenty to choose from, but I found the perfect one for you, my dear Gustavo. What we’ve got here is a 2022 WRX win the best color (no, I don’t give a fuck about blue) with under 14,000 miles on the clock. All of this 11.6-inch touchscreen goodness can be yours for just $29,500. Sure, it’s at the top of your budget, but buddy, you’ve got a Porsche. You can spend a lil’ extra.

Anyway, Gustavo, make the right choice. Buy a Subaru WRX (and a vape).
