Aston Martin posted a bigger-than-expected first-quarter pretax loss on Wednesday as the British luxury carmaker made fewer cars and burned more cash than analysts anticipated, sending its shares 7% lower.

Aston Martin, which has launched several new cars over the past year including its next-generation sports cars the DB12 and Vantage, stopped production of old models ahead of the ramp-up in production of fresh models later this year.

“Our first-quarter performance reflects this expected period of transition,” Chairman Lawrence Stroll said.

The shares fell as much as 14% to their lowest level since November 2022 and were last down 7% by 0837 GMT. The second quarter’s performance is expected to be broadly similar to the first but the group kept its 2024 forecast unchanged.

“This miss would raise questions, in our view,” analysts at JP Morgan wrote in a note.

Aston Martin in March named Bentley boss Adrian Hallmark as its new CEO to replace Amedeo Felisa later this year.

“I don’t expect there to be a significant deviation when Adrian comes, in fact I think we’ll double down and execution will remain the absolute priority,” finance chief Doug Lafferty told analysts.

“We know the priorities in the short term are get the product portfolio launched and build that demand, hit the free cash flow inflection point in the second half of this year and take that momentum into 2025,” he added.

The company reported wider adjusted pretax losses of 111 million pounds ($138 million) for the three months ended March 31, compared with 57 million pounds a year earlier. Analysts, on average, were expecting a loss of 93 million pounds.

Total wholesale volumes came in below expectations and free cash outflow was also bigger than expected for the quarter.

Aston Martin is scheduled to start deliveries of its V12 flagship sports car that will be propelled by a new engine, in the fourth quarter. It had pushed back its first electric vehicle by a year to 2026.

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has backed away from an ambitious plan for innovations in gigacasting, its pioneering manufacturing process, according to two sources familiar with the matter, in another sign that the electric-vehicle maker is retrenching amid falling sales and rising competition. 

Tesla has been a leader in gigacasting, a cutting-edge technique that uses huge presses with thousands of tons of clamping pressure to die-cast large sections of the car’s underbody. On a typical vehicle, the underbody can consist of hundreds of individual parts. 

Last year, as Tesla developed a new small-vehicle platform, it aimed to punch out the underbody in a single piece, Reuters exclusively reported last September, citing five sources familiar with the automaker’s gigacasting operations. The long-term goal was to radically simplify manufacturing and slash costs. 

But Tesla has since halted the effort, opting to stick with its more proven method of casting vehicle underbodies in three pieces: two gigacasted front and rear sections and a midsection made of aluminum and steel frames to store batteries, according to the two sources familiar with the matter. That is largely the same three-piece method the company has used for its past two new models, the Model Y crossover SUV and the Cybertruck pickup. 

Tesla’s retreat from one-piece gigacasting has not been previously reported. The automaker did not respond to a request for comment. 

The decision to hold off on the potential manufacturing breakthrough marks another example of Tesla slashing short-term spending as it adjusts to falling sales and profit margins, softening EV demand globally, and intensifying competition from rival EV makers such as China’s BYD. Tesla last month laid off more than 10% of its global workforce. A handful of senior executives have also resigned or been pushed out. 

Such moves also reflect a fundamental strategy shift, with Tesla now focusing more on developing self-driving vehicles than on pushing for huge growth in EV sales volume, which many investors had been counting on. 

The step-back on gigacasting occurred last autumn, the people said, before Tesla decided in late February to halt development of an all-new affordable car, often called the Model 2, which would have been the first vehicle it built with one-piece gigacasting. Reuters first reported the cancellation of the Model 2 on April 5. 

On April 23, as it released earnings that missed Wall Street expectations, Tesla said it had a simpler, faster plan for producing “more affordable” cars after shelving plans for the Model 2, which was expected to cost $25,000 and be released in the second half of 2025. 

Instead, Tesla officials said, it would produce affordable models using a current platform and production lines. On an investor call, Chief Executive Elon Musk declined to provide details on the planned new offerings or their target prices. 

Tesla has not entirely abandoned the small-vehicle platform it had planned for the Model 2. Instead, it will move forward in developing a self-driving robotaxi on the same platform, Reuters reported in the April 5 story. One of the two sources familiar with the automaker’s gigacasting operations said the suppliers involved are now adapting Tesla’s three-piece process for the next-generation vehicle. 

Both sources said the automaker decided last autumn to halt work on the more innovative and difficult one-piece casting process. At the time, the rationale for the decision was to speed development of the now-defunct Model 2 and avoid any costly delays or manufacturing problems, the two sources said. 

Big upfront investment

Tesla and Musk have said gigacasting helps the automaker reduce costs over the long term. But the process requires large initial investments and is difficult and time-consuming to perfect, automotive manufacturing experts say. 

Experts in vehicle manufacturing said Tesla’s more conservative path on gigacasting is no surprise and in part reflects the pains it has experienced historically in launching complex and innovative vehicles on time. The automaker’s highly experimental Cybertruck arrived last autumn at a far higher price than predicted after substantial delays to work through manufacturing issues. Tesla is still struggling to produce the angular, stainless-steel pickup in mass-market volumes. 

Holding off on one-piece gigacasting will save the company from making massive short-term capital investments in manufacturing and design, said Terry Woychowski, president of U.S. engineering company Caresoft Global, who has led teardowns and engineering analyses on numerous vehicles, including Teslas. 

“Would they rather have done it all in one big piece? Sure, they would’ve, but at what cost?” Woychowski asked. 

James Womack, a vehicle manufacturing expert and former research director at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said Tesla’s gigacasting pullback reflects the company’s scramble last year to launch an all-new $25,000 car to catch up with Chinese EV makers who are already dominating the low-cost EV segment. 

But pushing forward with an innovative production technique would do little to help sell a Tesla car to consumers, Womack said. 

“It’s not very exciting from the standpoint of the public and buyer,” Womack said, “and you don’t know whether this is really a big cost-saver or not.” 

If there’s one thing New York City Mayor Eric Adams wants you to know about the student protests on the campuses of Columbia University and City College of New York, it’s not that the students are justifiably upset about the ongoing genocide in Palestine. No, after nearly 300 people were arrested for protesting, Adams blamed “outside agitators,” saying, “This is a global problem that young people are being influenced by those who are professionals at radicalizing our children.” It might sound crazy, but the NYPD has actually discovered irrefutable proof — a bike chain.

Now, you might be thinking to yourself, “Isn’t a bike chain a very common way to keep a bike from being stolen? And don’t a lot of students who go to college in New York City ride bikes? Is there something I’m missing here? Did someone swing the bike chain at a cop or something?” And those would all be valid questions. To answer them, as best as we can tell, it’s yes, yes, no, no. It’s literally just a bike chain.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard went on Morning Joe to show off the bike chain that proves the student protests are actually run by outside forces and not a bunch of college kids who understood what Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich meant when he called for the “total annihilation” of Israel’s enemies. “This is not what students bring to school. This is what professionals bring to campuses and universities,” Deputy Commissioner Sheppard said before explaining that they were used to chain the doors to Hamilton Hall shut.

To be fair, those chains are very strong and quite difficult to break, which is why they’re popular with cyclists who would like their bikes to be in the same place they left them when they come back. Oh, and also, as it turns out, Columbia’s Public Safety department sells those exact bike chains. And at a discount, even! And yet, we’re supposed to believe that instead of Columbia students using bike chains they most likely bought through the school itself, they actually got them from Hamas or George Soros or some other “people who were not affiliated with the university.” OK, Eric. Whatever you say.

Now, if you ignore everything that’s been going on in the U.S. the entire time these kids were growing up, it is fair to question why the student protesters were so good at keeping the cops out of the building they were in. They’re college kids, after all, so how could they possibly make it so difficult for the cops to get in without professional assistance?

Think about it for more than half a second, though, and you’ll remember that this is the generation that was raised with constant school shooting drills. The professional assistance they got almost definitely came in the form of years of detailed instructions and practice in how to barricade a door. If they didn’t want college kids to be pros at keeping a shooter out, maybe they should have actually done something to stop school shootings instead.

Alternatively, university administrators could have followed the time-honored tradition of ignoring campus protests until they inevitably fizzle out, but apparently, that was simply too much to ask. Instead, they decided to bring in the cops, a method we all know worked so well during the Vietnam war. Oh, wait…

The Tesla Cybertruck is getting new software features to improve off-road performance, potentially helping turn the electric pickup into the more trail-ready vehicle some owners seem to want.

According to the official Cybertruck account on X (formerly Twitter), the social media network owned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the pickup will soon get an Off-Road Mode bundling a number of features that aim to add capability without changing any hardware.

Overland Mode and Baja Mode alter vehicle characteristics for different terrain, much like the off-road drive modes already available from several manufacturers. Overland Mode is designed for maximizing traction on rock, gravel, deep snow, or sand, while Baja Mode dials back stability control for more lively handling on loose surfaces. Also new is Trail Assist holds the vehicle at a set speed, including on both hill ascents and descents.

Dual-motor all-wheel drive Cybertrucks will also soon be able to actually engage their front and rear locking differentials thanks to the software update. The tri-motor Cyberbeast will also be able to do this with the front locking differential, but it will simulate a rear locker via software with the two rear motors.

A Slippery Surface mode will also temporarily lock the rear differential on dual-motor trucks (virtually simulated on tri-motor trucks) if traction is particularly bad on pavement. New programming for the Cybertruck’s adaptive suspension will also allow it to measure payloads more accurately and adjust to compensate. And Tesla is also adding a self-leveling feature to the suspension for camping, similar to what Rivian pushed to its R1 models in a previous software update.

Tesla is also in the midst of a Cybertruck recall to address pedal trim pieces that could slip off and jam the accelerator, causing unintended acceleration. That recall applied to less than 4,000 vehicles, indicating few Cybertrucks have actually been delivered.
