It’s no secret that legislation tends to lag behind technological and social advancements, but as technology advances at higher rates than ever before, legislation needs to react faster. Autonomous vehicles have been on California roads for years, but California law only allows enforcement of traffic violations for drivers. Since autonomous vehicles have no driver, they haven’t been subject to traffic enforcement, but two California bills aimed at changing that have passed the State Assembly’s Transportation Committee earlier this week.

The two bills cover different aspects of autonomous vehicle legislation. Senator Dave Cortese’s bill SB-915 empowers California cities to write their own individual regulations relating to autonomous vehicles, and Representative Phil Ting’s AB-1777 aims to make the driverless car companies liable for moving violations that their cars commit on California roads. The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association which represents most major autonomous vehicle companies, unsurprisingly opposes both bills meant to hold its members accountable for the actions of their products. NBC Bay Area reports,

The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, which represents major driverless car companies like Waymo and Cruise, opposes both bills, arguing Cortese’s attempts to give cities the ability to write their own laws could create a chaotic hodgepodge of regulations across the state that could stunt innovation.

“Regulatory certainty is crucial to allow for companies to expend the type of resources they need to expend for companies to deploy to scale,” said Renée Gibson, the association’s director of government affairs. “So when you have the potential for hundreds of local jurisdictions to set up their own regulations, that creates a patchwork of (regulations) and that creates an incredible amount of uncertainty.”

Cortese argues that since driverless cars have long argued their tech is superior to even human drivers and can adapt to all sorts of scenarios, he doesn’t understand why the prospect of having to program the cars to adhere to different rules in different cities would be too problematic.

“How are taxis and rideshares doing it with human drivers,” he said. “Supposedly, this wealth of intellect that’s built into the computer chip and the coding is not going to be able to do the same damn thing? You can’t have it both ways.”

Each of these proposed bills still has to get approved by their respective Appropriations Committees in the Assembly and Senate, and if approved they will go to a full vote later this summer. It’s shocking and downright reckless to me that autonomous vehicles have been operating without any real consequences for breaking laws that humans get ticketed for. Examples of violations that driverless cars are currently exempt from include running red lights, making illegal turns, and all other moving violations. If the bills pass, the new laws would take effect by July 1, 2026.

The 2024 model year was the last for the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 known as the Hellcat, at least in the Ram 1500 TRX.

The 2025 1500 RHO has arrived to fill in for the TRX. The new truck is essentially the TRX with its Hellcat V-8 replaced by Stellantis’ Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6.

But with only 540 hp, the RHO’s power rating is well down on the 702 hp of the TRX. That’s because the RHO isn’t the true successor of the TRX. Ram has another three-letter truck coming, and this one will be a high-horsepower flagship.

Ram teased the truck in a video starring actor Glen Powell, which was released last week as part of the launch for the RHO. At 58 seconds into the clip, a pair of dirt bikes are shown, one clearly displaying the number 540, and the other left without a number.

According to Jeff Summers, Ram’s head of advertising, this was actually a hidden Easter egg. The 540 is a reference to the RHO’s power rating. The bike without a number represents a sort of placeholder for what Summers refers to as Ram’s next “High HP vehicle with three letters.”

Summers didn’t say what’s coming, but former Ram CEO Mike Koval, Jr. in a 2022 interview said the TRX name isn’t going away with the Hellcat. He also said in a 2023 interview that Ram’s future electric trucks will have their own TRX-like variants.

One possibility for a future TRX, or whatever name Ram uses for its next range-topping performance truck, is a more powerful version of the Hurricane. During the 2022 SEMA show, fellow Stellantis brand Dodge said it plans to offer versions of the Hurricane engine in crate form with outputs ranging up to the mid-1,000-hp level. While these are being developed for competition use, a tamer, emissions-compliant version with closer to 700 hp may potentially end up in a production truck.

Adrian Newey will leave Red Bull Racing in the first quarter of 2025, the leading Formula 1 team announced on Wednesday.

The Red Bull chief technical officer has been with the squad since 2006. During that time, the team has racked up six Constructors’ titles and seven Drivers’ titles thanks to Newey’s designs and the talents of drivers Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen—and Verstappen looks set to win another title this year.

Newey’s design from 2023 remains the most dominant in the sport’s history with 21 wins from 22 races, but it wasn’t only with Red Bull where he found successor. Cars designed by Newey were also driven to multiple championship titles at McLaren and Williams.

In a statement, Newey said he wants to “seek new challenges,” as well as to take a step back from F1 in order to focus on completing the design for Red Bull’s RB17 hypercar. The track-only RB17 is scheduled to debut later this year and start production in 2025.

Newey also designed the Aston Martin Valkyrie, back when Aston Martin was title sponsor for the team.

Newey’s most recent contract with Red Bull actually runs through 2025, which marks the end of F1’s current design era. Starting in 2026, a new era for F1 design will include increased electrification as well as a switch to sustainable fuels.

Plenty of teams will be eager to sign Newey for 2026 and beyond, and he hasn’t ruled out joining another team at some point.

His replacement at Red Bull will be announced in due course.

CLARKSTON, Mich. — The 2024 Lexus TX 350 is an attractive, well-equipped three-row SUV with a legitimate luxury badge in the grille and a competitive pricing tag. This isn’t a challenger brand that’s overcompensating with a lot of goodies or an old-money firm trading off its name. This is a freakin’ Lexus. I liked it. Here’s why.

1. It’s a tremendous value!

The TX 350 has a cavernous interior, room for seven, a 14-inch touchscreen, 12-speaker sound system and heated front seats. I tested one in a cool shade of white dubbed Wind Chill Pearl that contrasts with the smokey 20-inch dark gray wheels. It looks the part of a premium SUV, all for the reasonable price of $55,050, including destination. Given that the average new vehicle costs around $44,000, the TX 350 feels like a well-above-average deal.

2. The TX 350’s powertrain is merely serviceable

OK, so you get a nice ride … powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder, which doesn’t compare well to turbo inline-sixes in the BMW X5 or Mazda CX-90. The TX lumbers at times, as 275 horsepower is adequate but nothing more to move this three-row barge. The 317 pound-feet of torque delivered as low as 1,700 rpm helps acceleration a bit, and the eight-speed automatic is a solid partner. So the powertrain is serviceable, and that philosophy applies to other areas to keep the TX’s price down. This one is front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive adds $1,600 to the sticker.

3. Interior is more sensible than sinful

The cabin is nice but hardly compares to the craftsmanship found in Mercedes and Lincoln SUVs. The black materials feel premium, but even with ambient lighting and grained trim, don’t feel deeply luxurious. (Take a look at our first drive review for more driving impressions.)

The NuLuxe interior trim is synthetic leather, which you may or may not prefer for a variety of reasons. Lexus says it’s better for the environment due to generating fewer C02 emissions during the manufacturing process and claims it’s easier to clean. It’s also not leather.

Some luxury interiors feel sinful. The TX feels sensible.

4. Speaking of value …

If you’re really into saving bucks, the Toyota Grand Highlander, the TX’s genetic alter-ego, is the play. The Grand Highlander — with this powertrain — starts at $44,715 and offers plenty of space and features, without the premium feel of a Lexus. Many Lexus vehicles have shared underpinnings with Toyotas for years, so it’s nothing to get worked up about. But, if value is your play, you owe it to yourself to check out the Grand Highlander. 

5. Then again …

Back to my original premise. This is a freakin’ Lexus. The spindle grille, look-at me creases, prominent headlights and snazzy wheels make a statement that most Toyotas don’t. While 55 grand is a nice floor, the TX 550h+ Luxury AWD model takes things all the way to $79,400, offering a higher level of options and a sophisticated powertrain that will make you forget about the Grand Highlander and its demure Toyota bearing. 

6. The people seem to like it

The TX is the third-best selling Lexus SUV, behind the RX (not surprising) and the NX (a little surprising). With nearly 10,000 sales through the first quarter, the TX is beginning to produce volume, presumably at a decent profit for Lexus. Adding a large, family-friendly, three-row was a low-risk play and it appears to be paying off for the brand.

The TX is a metaphor for the Lexus SUV lineup, which has a whopping 13 vehicles (including variants). It’s big, and there’s something for everyone.
