BMW has orbited around the pickup segment several times over the past few years without landing in it. In 2016, right after Mercedes-Benz badge-engineered a Nissan Navara into the short-lived X-Class, one of the Munich-based company’s executives confirmed his team was “watching the (pickup) space closely.” In 2019, an X7-based pickup concept made its debut to haul motorcycles. The final call is no, however.

“I think a pickup truck is beyond the brand,” explained Bernd Körber, the senior vice president of BMW brand and product management, in an interview with enthusiast publication BMW Blog. “In principle, I would say for a brand like BMW to differentiate, to make cars that are dream cars that really bring out the essence of BMW, we need niche models,” he added. In his opinion, a truck simply wouldn’t fit the bill.

Mercedes-Benz came to a similar conclusion: It axed the X-Class (which wasn’t imported to the United States) three years after unveiling the model. Over at Audi, we haven’t seen a production-bound truck, but the Activesphere concept shown in 2023 featured a truck-like cargo box.

That doesn’t mean BMW buyers will need to look elsewhere if they want a vehicle capable of serious off-roading. Körber told BMW Blog that his team has noticed rugged off-roaders, such as the Land Rover Defender and the Toyota Land Cruiser, have become increasingly popular in recent years. BMW doesn’t have Land Rover’s off-roading heritage, though it briefly owned the British brand and supplies some of its engines, but it’s open to the idea of giving buyers a more outdoorsy alternative to the popular SUVs in its range, like the X3 and the X5.

“Open to” isn’t synonymous with “developing,” and it sounds like nothing is set in stone; this is just an idea bouncing around Munich’s executive board meetings. One factor working in favor of a more rugged SUV is that it would have a global appeal. “Rugged is an interesting trend because it has moved from (being a) U.S., South Africa, and Australia phenomenon into a global phenomenon,” Körber pointed out.

If the model receives the proverbial green light for production, BMW Blog speculates that it will arrive as a more off-road-capable evolution of an existing model rather than as a standalone nameplate. Put another way, we’re more likely to see a jacked-up X5 with meaty tires than a boxy, G-Class-like SUV designed from the ground up to rip across the desert. There’s no word on when a decision will be made, however.

As the 1990s came to a close, there were two things that were unambiguously cool as hell: Pokémon and the Volkswagen New Beetle. Combining the two created a sensation that couldn’t be matched, and Nintendo was banking on that for the launch of what would become the highest grossing media franchise in history. A small run of ten “Pikabugs,” that is Bugs that were dressed up to look like star of stage and screen Pikachu, were built to travel around the U.S. and promote the games and shows from the late-1990s to the mid-2000s. As you can imagine, these don’t come up for sale very often, so if you absolutely have to have one, this is your chance.

If you weren’t between eight and 13 years old in 1998, you’ll probably never really understand what a sensation Pokémon was when it launched in the United States market. The video game, the trading card game, the cartoon television series, it was everywhere and everything. Kids got so into it, myself included, that my middle school banned anyone from bringing the cards or Nintendo Game Boys into the building (though that was not unusual for us, as my class also got yo-yos, pogs, and the playground game four square banned.)

A regular 1998 Volkswagen New Beetle with 170,000 miles on the odometer is worth about a nickel on the used market, but this is number nine of ten Pikabugs we’re talking about. Surely someone is willing to pony up the $125,000 asking price for this not-quite-complete example. It’s a piece of videogame and automotive history, after all!

This car has had the 2.0-liter four-cylinder replaced at some point, but if you wanted to get it back to numbers-matching, you could. The sale of the car comes with the “original engine crated.” When they were built, each Pikabug included a CRT television in the back hatch so that interested parties could play the games or watch episodes of the show at events. This one, sadly, has had that part of the build removed, though it could probably be replicated by a custom audio shop fairly easily. The side decals for this car are also missing.

The seller, based in Madison, Wisconsin, is sad to be getting rid of the car, saying “This is not an easy decision, but necessary.” At the asking price surely it’ll be gone in a matter of minutes. It’s a bargain at twice the price! There are only nine more of these out there in the world, just in case you gotta catch ‘em all!

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed in March after it was struck by an enormous container ship that lost power while exiting the city’s port. The collision left the stricken Dali container ship stuck under the remnants of the bridge and made entry and exit of the Port of Baltimore nearly impossible. Now, experts have revealed the cost of replacing the damaged bridge, and it’s an eye-watering figure.

While recovery efforts at the bridge remain ongoing, Maryland’s Department of Transportation has confirmed that it plans to replace the Francis Scott Key Bridge as soon as possible, reports the Associated Press. However, the cost of the replacement could spiral into the billions of dollars, as the site explains:

Maryland plans to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge in just over four years at an estimated cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion, a state transportation official said Thursday.

The state plans to build a new span by fall of 2028, said David Broughton, a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Transportation. He said the cost estimate is preliminary, and detailed engineering specifics have not been confirmed.

When it comes to who will foot the bill for the mammoth construction effort, it does seem like it will be mostly down to state and federal officials to cough up the majority of the funds.

The operator of the Dali has so far made several attempts to limit its financial responsibility, which included calling on an ancient maritime law that caps the amount shipping companies must spend following disasters. It also looked for ways to spread its responsibility among ever company that had cargo onboard.

State funds won’t be alone in paying for the new bridge, however, as AP revealed that the insurance company behind the river crossing has confirmed it will pay up $350 million towards the repairs. The payout, which will be made to the state of Maryland, is expected to “be the first of many payouts related to the collapse,” reports AP.

While the promise of a new river crossing in Baltimore is a shimmer of hope following the catastrophic collapse, today did bring a reminder of the true cost of the collapse as another body was recovered from the wreckage of the bridge.

When the Dali hit the Scott Key Bridge, six construction workers were killed in the collision, and now a fifth body has been recovered by salvage workers. As the AP adds:

The Key Bridge Response Unified Command announced that the victim found Wednesday was identified as Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland. All of the victims were Latino immigrants who came to the United States from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

There remains one highway worker that was killed in the collision who has not yet been recovered from the wreckage.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday it has closed a long-running investigation into the loss of rear-view camera images in nearly 160,000 of Tesla’s Model X and Model S vehicles.

The auto safety regulator said Tesla’s 2021 recall of almost 135,000 vehicles appears to address the risk presented by the failure of a media control unit and will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the callback.

Tesla agreed to the recall to address touchscreen failures under pressure from NHTSA, after the agency sought the callback in a formal letter. Automakers usually agree to voluntary fixes before the auto safety agency formally seeks a recall.

The agency said touchscreen failures posed significant safety issues, including the loss of rearview or backup camera images, exterior turn-signal lighting, and windshield defogging and defrosting systems that “may decrease the driver’s visibility in inclement weather.”

NHTSA said Friday the failure also impacts the Autopilot advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and turn signal functionality due to potential loss of audible chimes, driver sensing, and alerts.

The agency last week opened a separate probe into Tesla’s recall of 2 million vehicles in December to boost Autopilot safeguards.

NHTSA first opened a probe in June 2020 into complaints that media control unit (MCU) failures led to touchscreen displays not working.

NHTSA initially sought a recall of 158,000 vehicles but the recall did not include some vehicles with upgraded processors built after March 2018.

NHTSA said Friday the MCU has a finite lifespan and “believes that a 5- or 6-year life expectancy for a component integral to providing the driver with safety functions is insufficient.”

Tesla said all units will inevitably fail given the memory device’s finite storage capacity, the agency said. Tesla said in February that about 104,000 of the 135,000 vehicles recalled have been repaired.

The company had last month recalled 3,878 Cybertrucks to fix an accelerator pedal pad that could come loose and get lodged in the interior trim.

Cadillac has the electric Escalade IQ going on sale this summer as a 2025 model, but the current gas-powered model isn’t going anywhere.

On the contrary, it will be given similar styling and technology to its electric counterpart as part of a mid-cycle refresh that should also be introduced for the 2025 model year.

A prototype has just been spotted, and it’s completely devoid of camouflage gear. The prototype is for the fire-breathing Escalade-V grade, but most of the changes seen here should also apply to the regular Escalade.

Clearly visible is the new front-end design which adopts slit-like lights at the leading edge of the hood. Below this in a vertical arrangement is the main headlight cluster. The front fascia also sports new black plastic surfaces in a similar pattern to what’s found on the Escalade IQ. The prototype was seen riding on 24-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone all-season tires measuring 285 millimeters across. That’s up 10 mm on the current Escalade-V’s tires.

A much more substantial update looks to be taking place in the cabin. The gas-powered Escalade will receive the same high-tech treatment found in the Escalade IQ. This means digital screens spanning the width of the dash to serve as the gauge cluster, infotainment screen, and a front passenger screen. These will be joined by one more screen sitting in the center stack for the climate controls and other vehicle settings. Like in other General Motors vehicles, the system will be fully powered by Google, meaning no support for Apple CarPlay.

It isn’t clear what Cadillac has planned for the powertrains. Escalade buyers currently have two options to choose from in the regular SUV: a 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 or a 277-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6. Both powertrains offer adequate performance, though neither is what you’d call exciting. For excitement, the Escalade-V brings a 682-hp 6.2-liter supercharged V-8.

A 10-speed automatic is standard across the range, and regular grades come with rear-wheel drive as standard, though the Escalade-V gets an available four-wheel-drive system as standard.

Given the lack of camouflage gear, the debut is likely close. The current Escalade-V is priced from about $150,000, but with all of the updates that are coming, an increase in pricing isn’t out of the question.
