• Sprint qualifying pole in Miami goes to Max Verstappen, Ricciardo wows with pace

The Formula 1 race weekend continues in Miami with Sprint qualifying that saw Max Verstappen take pole position for tomorrow afternoon’s Sprint race. Charles Leclerc in his Ferrari lines up alongside him, as this session went much better than free practice that saw him spin his blue SF-24. Behind them, Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo make up the second row.

Ricciardo was undoubtedly the surprise of the session, scoring his best qualifying position of the season and putting his Racing Bulls car somewhere we haven’t seen it yet. It may just be enough to quiet those doubting that Ricciardo is the one for the job, as he outdid drivers that have outperformed him since the start of the season, including teammate Yuki Tsunoda. That said, he’ll need to execute in the Sprint tomorrow if he intends to bring home points and not get passed by those behind him.

McLaren appeared to have great pace in the qualifying’s first two sessions, but both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri saw massive performance drop-offs when it came time to set their starting positions with Norris in ninth and Piastri in sixth. Most teams blamed the poor soft tire performance for some unpredictability in the final qualifying session, but it’s a disappointing result for McLaren considering the hyped upgrades it brought to this weekend. We’ll see if there’s any more pace in the car come race time tomorrow.

Sprint qualifying pole in Miami goes to Max Verstappen, Ricciardo wows with pace

Unfortunately for Mercedes, its two drivers were the disappointment of the Sprint qualifying. Lewis Hamilton only managed 12th after clipping a wall on his last attempt and George Russel was right with him in 11th.

The South Florida native Logan Sargeant put his Williams in 19th for the Sprint a couple of hours after his Team Principal James Vowles spoke positively about him in the face of rumors that he might be replaced by young Kimi Antonelli before the end of the year. As disappointing of a starting position that may be for his home race, he will line up ahead of his teammate Alex Albon for the first time this year due to Albon having his laptime deleted, dropping him to dead last on the grid.

This weekend is notably the first time Miami has hosted a Sprint race, and it’s doing so with the new order of events that puts qualifying for Sunday’s Grand Prix after the Sprint concludes instead of before it. Per usual, tomorrow’s Sprint will be one-third the distance of a standard grand prix. It begins at noon Eastern time, and weather predictions are similar to what we saw today with hot temperatures and no rain whatsoever.

  • Doing A Brake Job On A Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Can Cost More Than $100,000

Owning a supercar can be expensive, even if you have the means. The engineering and parts that go into making these vehicles perform the way they do can be shockingly expensive. Take what one dealership charged a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren owner for brakes.

In creating the SLR together, Mercedes and McLaren developed a new braking system called Sensotronic Brake Control. Essentially a brake-by wire-system, it eliminated many of the mechanical parts that were used in normal braking systems. Mercedes said the carbon-ceramic brakes were fade-resistant up to temperatures of 2,200 degrees fahrenheit. They were massive, measuring just over 14 inches for both the front and rear discs, the fronts used eight-piston calipers while the rears had four-piston calipers.

Brakes like these, especially on a car with performance of the SLR, unsurprisingly have an equally massive price when they need to be replaced. This particular 2005 SLR is owned by @humped.my.importer, a car collector and enthusiast who took to social media to tweet his frustration over how much he paid for his brakes. He took his SLR to Mercedes-Benz of Knoxville, Tennessee for the service. Whatever number you’re thinking of in your head probably still won’t prepare you for the actual cost of what they charged this man to do a brake job: $120,462.79. No, that number is not a mistake.

I mean sure, the SLR cost nearly half a million dollars when it new, and fewer than 3,000 were made. But still, it can’t be that expensive, can it? Wanting to know more, I called a few local Mercedes dealers here in Southern California to see if that is what it would really cost to do the brakes on this supercar.

I started with Mercedes of Downtown Los Angeles. After putting me on hold for nearly 10 minutes, the service advisor came back and laid it on me: the front brakes would be $67,219 while the rears would be a slightly cheaper $65,283. He also informed me that the rear brakes were out of production and they’d have to order them from Germany. Wanting a bit more convincing, I called another dealer.

    Photo: Mercedes-Benz

Next I got in contact with Mercedes of Beverly Hills, a dealer who should have some pretty good experience dealing with SLRs. Weirdly I got a price quote that was as if the SLR was any other Mercedes, as he quoted me prices of just $3,350 for the front and $1,858 for the rear. If true, this could be a steal, though I actually suspect the guy misunderstood me or something.

Since that didn’t seem quite right, I called Mercedes of Ontario, who were happy to help me out. The customer service was excellent but it went to another level when I told them what car I was calling about. Their pricing almost lined up with Downtown LA’s: including parts and labor it would be $64,840 for the front brakes and $62,840 for the rears, so figure just under $128,000 for a full brake job. It looks like that really is the going rate for a brake job on one of these things, so the original Twitter poster was actually getting a bit of a deal. Even if you have deep pockets, it’s still a sphincter clenching price.

  • Nissan Versa Driver Demonstrates Why You Should Never Drive Into Floodwaters

Whether you believe in climate change or not, you can’t deny that life on Earth has faced increasingly frequent and intense weather anomalies in recent years. More people across the United States and the world have been subjected to unprecedented levels of rain, and more frequent and powerful storms causing flooding, mud slides, and dangerous conditions.

In fact, floods are the most common weather-related natural disaster in every state in the country, so whether you live in drier-than-a-popcorn-fart Nevada or wet-and-wild Florida, this information is important. If your region is experiencing flooding, how can you safely get to where you need to go? Here are three tips for staying safe while navigating flooded areas.

    Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Do not enter flooded streets, even if you’re in a big SUV that makes you feel unstoppable, and especially if you’re in a low road car. The Los Angeles Times reports,

As little as 6 inches of water can cause cars to stall or knock an adult off their feet. Two feet of water can sweep a car off the road, including an SUV or pickup truck. Any amount of water means you won’t be able to see what condition the road is in. Heed all road closure notifications and instructions from emergency responders.

As this video shows, even areas that don’t look severely flooded can hide dangerous conditions. The woman driving this Nissan Versa accidentally drove directly into a swollen creek. The roadway she was driving on didn’t look immediately treacherous, and honestly I wouldn’t have known there was a river running through the area, which goes to show that you never know what’s hiding underneath murky flood waters. It’s not worth risking your life to drive through a flood.

    Heed Warning Signs

If you are driving in a region that’s experiencing flooding, you may come across signs that warn about possible flooding ahead. Some signs may tell you that the road ahead is flooded, in which case it’s best to turn around and find an alternate route. Even if you’re driving a lifted truck, it’s best to simply turn around and find an alternate route. Even if someone’s filming you or encouraging you to drive through the flooded area, turn around. You don’t want your fragile ego to be the thing that gets you into a potentially life threatening situation.

If Your Car Stalls In A Flood, Get Out Of It.

Cars and deep water don’t mix well. If your car stalls in a flood due to deep waters, get out of the car immediately and seek higher ground. Forget about your car; your car is replaceable, your life is not. If you are stranded on top of your vehicle or on top of a structure, stay where you are and wait for help. Do not get into the water, as floods often cause strong currents that will knock you down, and as the TikTok shows, you never know what’s lurking beneath the murky waters of a flood. You might be stepping into a deep river instead of a few inches of muddy water.

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Associate Editor Byron Hurd for a gasoline-powered installment. They lead off by diving into the Tesla layoff news from this week before leaving electrification behind for a bit to talk about not one, but two production V12 unveilings. This isn’t a drill, folks; Aston Martin and Ferrari are both committed. After that, they touch on the U.S. government announcement that it would mandate automatic emergency braking systems starting in 2029. They finish up the news segment with a chat about Fisker. Poor, poor Fisker. From there, it’s on to the road tests. The Autoblog team has been testing out some EVs and both Byron and Greg had some thoughts to share, plus we get a final update from Byron on the long-term Subaru WRX and some notes from both drivers about the updated Range Rover Evoque.

The 10 cheapest cars to drive per mile in 2024

Automakers are increasingly stepping back from EV-only product roadmaps in favor of more hybrids and PHEVs, and recent driving cost data between November 2022 and April 2023 from iSeeCars shows that this might be good for buyers in more ways than one. While electric vehicles can save money on gas, they cost more and are driven less, which makes the cost per mile much higher than that of other fuel types. Hybrids were found to be much less expensive to drive, dominating the list of the cheapest cars to drive per mile.

The 10 cheapest cars to drive per mile

The Honda Insight was the least expensive in the iSeeCars study, at $1,463 per 1,000 miles, or $1.46 per mile. Other vehicles on the list include:

Hybrid vehicle pricing continues to fall, making them more comparable with gas models. Those more reasonable purchase prices, combined with in-town fuel savings, make them appealing for buyers looking to put some miles on the clock, driving down their average cost per mile. Only one PHEV made the top 10 list, with two in the top 15, including the Toyota Prius Prime in 12th place at $2.71 per mile.

EVs are more expensive to buy than other fuel types, and high-end models tend to be driven less, giving them some of the highest per-mile costs in the study. The Porsche Taycan was the priciest vehicle in the study, at $22.02 per mile. The Porsche Cayenne PHEV, with its six-figure average purchase price, was second most expensive at $14.68. iSeeCars attributes many of the higher prices to the cars’ extreme average purchase prices, all of which exceeded $48,000. The BMW i3 was the cheapest, while the Taycan was the most expensive, at almost $140,000 on average.

  • Fisker Resorts To Fixing Customer Cars With Preproduction Parts From 'Graveyard'

The launch of the Fisker Ocean has been plagued with problems, and those problems are now compounding in ways that make everything worse for owners. See, problems mean repairs, but parts shortages mean those fixes could take eons to actually complete — unless you have a “graveyard” of preproduction parts to slap onto customer cars.

Business Insider spoke with multiple workers at (or formerly at) Fisker, who said that they’d pulled parts from a “graveyard” of vehicles to get customers back on the road. That graveyard contains not just nonfunctional production cars, but preproduction models never intended for sale. From Business Insider:

In response to a backlog of customer-service requests and a shortage of available parts, Fisker technicians have stripped parts off what some have called “donor cars,” which include Fisker Ocean preproduction and production vehicles that are sitting in the company’s facility in La Palma, California, three current and five former Fisker employees said. The workers spoke to BI on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about company affairs. Business Insider also viewed several photos of Fisker Ocean cars with missing parts that sources say were used for customer vehicles.

One current Fisker employee with knowledge of the issue said technicians have resorted to taking parts off other cars to address customer-service requests in about 10% to 15% of fixes over the past few months, particularly for customers near the company’s La Palma site.

Typically, the parts are pulled from a back area at the La Palma site, where there is a lineup of preproduction vehicles that some have dubbed the “graveyard,” five of the sources told BI. Preproduction cars are made after prototypes and are essentially beta versions of the vehicle not intended for customer use — just testing and demos; production vehicles are the final product that customers are delivered. Some of the vehicles at the site are Fisker Oceans that had been returned by customers, two current employees and one former worker said.

Having driven plenty of preproduction vehicles in this line of work, I’ve yet to see one with parts that I wouldn’t trust on a production vehicle. That said, I haven’t driven a preproduction Fisker – it’s possible things operate differently at a company where even the production vehicles don’t quite come out fully baked.

This brings up a much more important question, though: What should this process be called? The cars aren’t really zombies, but the parts arguably are — having returned from the dead to fix the living. It could be a Frankenstein situation, a conglomeration of dead parts forming something that’s alive, or even something straight Christian. If you take integration of parts as a form of consumption, this process could fall under “so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.”

It’s nearly time to turn off your work computer, and your overworked brain, for a few dozen delightful hours of you-time known colloquially as the weekend. In anticipation of ending your capitalistic toils to enjoy an ever fleeting sense of leisure, click the play button and slather the folds of your brain in a thick salve of Lancia Delta S4 Gruppe B. The symphonic pleasure of turbocharger, supercharger, tire whine, and exhaust staccato are here to ease you into the all-too-short next-phase of your week. Drop what you’re doing and watch this for ten minutes of pure bliss. You deserve it.

The Legendary Lancia Delta S4 Gr. B Engine Sounds | 8000+rpm Twincharged 4-Cyl Engine | *MUST HEAR*

The Delta S4, sometimes referred to by its Abarth project code SE038, was a magnificent competition machine. Martini Racing Lancia introduced the car at the tail end of the Group B regulations, and the car instantly won the final round of the 1985 World Rally Championship.

The 1986 WRC championship victory could have gone Lancia’s way after taking four victories, but the results of the Sanremo round (which Lancia won in a 1-2-3 finish) were nullified that year. There’s a lot to the story, but Italian officials disqualified the Peugeot runners for “illegal aero skirts” which were later found to be perfectly legal, but the Italians were homers for Lancia. Scrapping that rally altogether handed the final Group B championship win to Peugeot’s Juha Kankkunen.

Don’t worry about any of that right now, though. Right now is the time to put this YouTube video in full-screen view, crank up the sound on your noise-cancelling headphones, and watch a bunch of hooligans drive some historically hooligan Italian cars. Zone out for a few minutes. You’re worth it.
