With the EV segment caught in a tug-of-war between market demand and government regulations, carmakers are having to adapt to avoid losing both money and sales. Stellantis is keeping every option on the table, including putting a gasoline engine in its electric models.

Natalie Knight, the chief financial officer for Stellantis, made the announcement while presenting the carmaker’s first-quarter shipment and revenues results. She cited the Jeep Wagoneer S as an example: Unveiled in January 2024, it will go on sale with an electric powertrain, but the brand hasn’t ruled out expanding the lineup with a gasoline-powered model later on, according to Wards Auto. It could be a hybrid, or it might not get any type of electrification. The call will depend on whether there is “a clear demand for that in the market,” the executive said.

Compare that with comments from new Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa, who has said hybridizing the Wagoneer S isn’t in the cards — but making a PHEV version of the all-electric upcoming Recon, however, might be.

“I don’t want to ignore the fact that we want to stay close to the consumer, and if we see there’s an opportunity with those models that we introduced as BEVs first, we’ll look into that,” Knight said. Stellantis plans to launch 25 new models globally in 2024, and 18 of those will go on sale with electric power. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll remain electric-only throughout their production run.

The brands that live under the Stellantis umbrella can build a gasoline-powered version of an EV with relative ease because many of the cars in the group’s portfolio ride on a multi-energy platform. For example, the new Dodge Charger (pictured) will go on sale with an electric drivetrain later in 2024, but the range will grow with the addition of a 3.0-liter straight-six in 2025. Across the pond, the Jeep Avenger (a small, hatchback-like crossover not designed with our market in mind) was hyped as an all-electric model when it made its debut in 2023, but it quietly gained a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain in early 2024. The city-friendly Peugeot 208 is offered with piston or battery power, too.

One of the next electric recipients of a gasoline engine might be the new-to-us Fiat 500e. The retro-styled hatchback has exclusively been available as an EV since it went on sale in Europe in 2020, but executives are reportedly looking at turning it into a hybrid due to slow sales.

Like many of its rivals, Stellantis is also putting an increasingly important focus on plug-in hybrid models. The top-three best-selling PHEV models in the United States are the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Dodge Hornet, according to Wards Auto. 

“We’re committed very much to the EV market but, on the other hand, we have the flexibility to grow and go where the consumer is,” Knight said.

 

Starting this year, Porsche will supply teams competing in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup with synthetic fuel, also known as e-fuel.

While carbon dioxide is emitted when the fuel is burned, the generation of the fuel absorbs CO2 from the air, making the process carbon-neutral.

The fuel is sourced from the Porsche-backed Haru Oni pilot plant in Chile, and is produced using wind-generated electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then combined with CO2 captured from the air to produce synthetic methanol, which in turn forms the basis for a final gasoline-like fuel.

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is a one-make race series built around the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car. There are 32 cars in the 2024 season, and each will run on e-fuel for the eight rounds planned in Europe this season. Porsche said around 13,200 gallons of e-fuel will be required.

Each of the eight rounds will coincide with a round of the Formula 1 World Championship. F1 also plans to switch to switch to a sustainable fuel like e-fuel in 2026, when new power unit rules are introduced.

Porsche has been testing e-fuels in the Mobil 1 Supercup since 2021, in partnership with series sponsor ExxonMobil, though previously blended fuel that was only partially synthetic was used.

While it continues to push ahead with electric cars, Porsche has become quite bullish on synthetic fuels. Porsche engineer Frank Walliser said in 2021 that cars running on e-fuel could have lower overall emissions than EVs (once emissions from manufacturing are factored in). He also said all of Porsche’s current internal-combustion engines could use synthetic fuel without modifications. The automaker has also floated synthetic fuels as a way to keep classic cars on the road in the face of tougher emissions standards.

OPEC+ is expected to prolong oil output cuts into the second half of the year as it seeks to stave off a global surplus and shore up prices.

Saudi Arabia and its partners have been keeping roughly 2 million barrels-a-day offline this year, and will meet on June 1 to consider whether to continue. Crude prices soared last month on fears that conflict in the Middle East could disrupt oil supplies, stirring talk that OPEC+ might revive output to calm the market.

But 87% of traders and analysts surveyed by Bloomberg predict that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies will extend the curbs, potentially to the end of the year. 

“OPEC+ will want to see evidence of sustained tightness in oil markets before starting to add supply, so there’s a good chance they will decide to extend,” said Richard Bronze, an analyst at Energy Aspects Ltd. “The discussions will not begin in earnest until closer to the meeting date.”

Oil prices have retreated close to a six-week low near $84 a barrel in London as traders shrug off hostilities between Iran and Israel, while the market outlook darkens amid faltering growth in China, and abundant crude supplies from the US, Brazil and Guyana. 

The price retreat could offer some relief for consumers and central banks grappling with stubborn inflation, and even for President Joe Biden as he campaigns for re-election with gasoline prices never far from the political agenda.

Yet it’s a concern for many of the 22 OPEC+ nations. 

Group leader Saudi Arabia needs prices near $100 a barrel, the International Monetary Fund estimates, as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spends lavishly on futuristic cities and top-flight sports players. Co-leader Russia also requires revenues as President Vladimir Putin continues to wage war on Ukraine. 

Price Pressures

If OPEC+ relaxes the supply restraints, world oil markets could tip back into surplus, according to the International Energy Agency in Paris, adding to the pressure on prices. The supply picture will only tighten up if OPEC+ continues to act, Shell Plc Chief Financial Officer Sinead Gorman said on Thursday.

Twenty-six of 30 survey respondents forecast that OPEC+ would persevere, and eight of those predicted the curbs would last to the end of 2024 or even longer. Only four projected production increases, of as much as 1.1 million barrels a day. 

The alliance, which will gather at its Vienna headquarters on June 1, hasn’t yet signaled its intentions. 

OPEC’s secretariat pledged in a report that the group will closely monitor oil markets in the coming summer months for signs of tightening, a shift in tone that some observers took as signaling readiness to add barrels. Meanwhile, Riyadh and Washington are privately negotiating a security pact that, if finalized, could encourage the kingdom adopt a more accommodating oil policy. 

Tipping Point

Still, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman hasn’t made any public comments, and sometimes unveils surprise decisions to punish speculators. Several OPEC+ delegates privately said it’s too early to form a view.

“We are at a tipping point in the oil markets where there is a strong case to add volumes,” said Christyan Malek, global head of energy strategy at JPMorgan Chase & Co. Still, “this is a balancing act — there’s a case to add, and also a case not to add. It’s not clear cut.”

Internal divisions could also stymie a consensus.

While Saudi Arabia often advocates caution when adding supplies to the market, its neighbor the United Arab Emirates sometimes takes a conflicting stance. 

Abu Dhabi faces less financial pressure to keep prices high and has been keen to deploy new investments in production capacity. The emirate currently holds more than 1 million barrels-a-day of idle supply, and blamed the sacrifice imposed by OPEC+ quotas when it lowered economic growth projections last month. 

Meeting Commitments

OPEC+ will also need to confront whether all members are adhering to their commitments. 

Iraq and Kazakhstan have acknowledged pumping several hundred thousand barrels above their agreed limits and, while they’ve pledged to make additional cutbacks in compensation, have a patchy record when it comes to delivery. 

Russia’s cooperation has also been ambiguous. 

Riyadh reluctantly allowed the country to deliver its share of output curbs during the first quarter via a blend of reductions to exports of crude oil and refined products, an arrangement complicated further by Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries. Moscow has promised to step up its contribution by focusing more on cutting crude production. 

Still, OPEC+ has repeatedly shown since the alliance’s creation seven years ago that, faced with the collective risk of faltering prices, it can overcome divisions and perform effectively. A fragile market may once again compel the group to both persevere with supply curbs, and do a better job of delivering them.   

“The alliance will have no choice but stay on course,” said Tamas Varga, an analyst at brokers PVM Oil Associates Ltd. in London. “Anything else will most plausibly lead to a sell-off.”

Ferrari has been evaluating prototypes for the successor to the 812 Superfast on public roads for months, and the automaker took to social media on Thursday to confirm the debut will happen later in the day, at 8 p.m. EST to be specific.

Ferrari also posted a teaser video featuring founder Enzo Ferrari recounting a story of when celebrated Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan said to him that his V-12 engines deliver a “symphony” that no orchestra could ever match.

The video ends with a blurred out car driving off into the distance with its engine wailing away.

Considering the time of the reveal will be the middle of the night in Maranello, it’s possible the 812 successor will debut on the sidelines of the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix where preparations for this weekend’s race are already underway. Ferrari has some events planned in the U.S. to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of its operations here, and the reveal of the new V-12 GT would be a great way to celebrate.

Not much is known about the car but camouflaged prototypes point to an evolutionary shape. The car will likely ride on Ferrari’s newest platform for front-midship cars. The platform, which was first announced in 2018, supports multiple wheelbase lengths, engine types, and seating configurations. It can also be equipped with all-wheel-drive and hybrid technologies.

The engine destined for the 812 successor is likely the newly developed 6.5-liter V-12 that debuted last year in the Purosangue. The engine delivers 715 hp in the SUV but will likely offer more in the 812 successor. The engine in the 812 Superfast, also a 6.5-liter V-12, was rated at 789 hp. It was dialed up to 819 hp for the hardcore 812 Competizione variant.

V-12 fans can also look forward to the successor to the Aston Martin DBS this year, likely with the Vanquish name attached. Aston Martin only on Wednesday announced a newly developed V-12 for the car, rated at 824 hp.

Red Bull Racing is just months out from unveiling its RB17 hypercar.

The leading Formula 1 team confirmed a debut scheduled for July during Wednesday’s shock announcement of long-time Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey’s planned departure from the team in early 2025.

The timing points to a debut of the hypercar at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K., which runs July 11-14.

Newey is leading the design of the RB17, a track-only car that could potentially deliver performance on par with modern F1 cars. One of his main goals for the car is to deliver a true F1 experience from behind the wheel. Newey was also responsible for the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Red Bull said Newey will step back from designing F1 cars during his remaing time with the team to focus on the hypercar.

Newey in February said the car will come with a V-10 engine aided by an electric motor for a combined output of around 1,200 hp. The V-10 will deliver 1,000 hp on its own and rev to a 15,000-rpm limit, he said.

Red Bull has also said the RB17 will sport the most advanced ground effects package used on a car sold to the public. This is expected to include features such as adjustable side skirts, and an active suspension to compensate for some of the negative side effects of such packages, like the bouncing and resulting nose lift, known as porpoising, seen on some F1 cars since 2022, when new ground effects design rules were introduced. The car is also expected to come with a blown diffuser, which directs exhaust gases above the diffuser to aid downforce, plus bespoke Michelin tires.

Red Bull first announced plans for the car in 2022. The team said at the time that 50 examples are planned, each priced at around 5 million British pounds (approximately $6.3 million), and that production will start in 2025.
