    So, my friends, that is the 2024 Kia Telluride SX Prestige. In just about every single way, it’s a wonderful family crossover that provides a really compelling suite of tech and features at a price that won’t break the bank ($54,540 as tested, including destination).

    Through my time with the car, it really proved to be an excellent vehicle that could handle just about every task thrown at it. There’s still just one problem though: the very fact that the minivan exists. A minivan can do 99 percent of what a Telluride can. Sure it’ll be a bit better off-road and you can tow more, but other than that, a minivan handily wins. A smarter person will buy a minivan in this situation.

    However, I am not a smart person, and because of that, I would also go with something like the Telluride if I had a family of 2.4 nightmares and a wife who loved me.

    Minivans are brilliant, but I like the Kia Telluride.

    Honda 'steadily and surely moving ahead' on EVs, announces large investment

    TOKYO — Japanese automaker Honda reaffirmed its commitment to electric vehicles Thursday, saying it will invest 10 trillion yen ($65 billion) through fiscal 2031 to deliver EV models around the world, including the U.S. and China.

    “Honda has not changed its belief that EVs are the most effective solution in the area of small mobility products such as motorcycles and automobiles,” the Tokyo-based company said in a statement.

    By 2030, battery EVs and fuel cell EVs will make up 40% of Honda Motor Co.’s global auto sales, and it will have global production capacity for more than 2 million EVs, it said.

    The so-called “0 Series,” a key part of Honda’s EV strategy, will be a totally new EV series created from “zero,” Chief Executive Toshihiro Mibe told reporters in an online presentation.

    The 0 Series will be introduced in North America in 2026 and then rolled out globally, with seven models launched by 2030. In China, Honda will introduce 10 EV models by 2027, with 100% of its auto sales there EVs by 2035.

    “We will become a frontrunner in changing lifestyles to attain sustainability goals, not wait for someone else to tackle them,” Mibe told reporters.

    Despite some talk of a slowdown in electric vehicles in some markets, the move toward EVs remains solid in the long run, becoming dominant in the latter half of the 2020s, according to Honda, which makes Acura and Civic sedans and Gold Wing Tour motorcycles.

    Honda’s determination to pursue battery and fuel-cell EVs appears to contrast with domestic rival Toyota Motor Corp.’s more varied or “multiple” powertrains approach, focusing on hybrids and other models that still have engines.

    Honda is keeping hybrids in its lineup as it ramps up output of EVs, beefing up battery production, and making them thinner, aiming for zero accidents, Mibe said.

    Of the 10 trillion yen ($65 billion) investment in the works, about 2 trillion yen ($13 billion) will go into research and development on software and another 2 trillion yen ($13 billion) into setting up comprehensive EV value chains in key markets such as the U.S., Canada and Japan.

    About 6 trillion yen ($39 billion) will go into “monozukuri,” or “the art of making things” in Japanese, such as the construction of next-generation EV production plants, electrification of motorcycles and EV model development, the company said.

    Mibe stressed Honda’s various partnerships, such as the one on developing EVs and intelligent driving technology with Japanese rival Nissan Motor Co., announced earlier this year.

    Honda announced Wednesday it signed a deal with IBM to work together on computer chips and software for future vehicles, meeting the upcoming demand for better processing and lower power consumption.

    “We are steadily and surely moving ahead to be prepared for electrification,” Mibe said.

    With its raised suspension and roof-top tent, today’s Nice Price or No Dice F250 is literally three stories tall. It can be had without the camper for half the cost, but as is always the case with big trucks, we want to see what it’s worth to go whole hog.

    It’s long been said that “good things come in small packages.” Contrastingly, it’s also been averred that “size matters.” A prima facie example of such polar opinions could be found in yesterday’s 1972 Honda Trail 70 motorcycle. Small enough to fit in a trunk once its handlebars are folded down, it came with a contrastingly large $3,950 price tag. Those irreconcilable extremes came to a head in the form of an 89 percent No Dice loss.

    What we should note about yesterday’s tiny Honda is that it does seem to have been priced market-appropriate as others in similar condition ask about the same. That doesn’t make it right, however, which you all noted in both comments and the vote.

    Another area where opinions might differ from those of the category’s adherents is in the world of Overlanding. That’s the adventurous advocacy of driving to remote locations and living for a time “off the grid” in what is typically some capable but markedly bougie 4×4 converted van or camper truck.

    Today’s 2000 Ford F250 Superduty Crew Cab 4X4 is offered as a stand-alone work truck with a modular flatbed in the back featuring side-mounted toolboxes and a fold-down work table that can be removed for spillover space. In addition to that, the seller offers a 2022 Scout Kenai slide-in camper with rooftop tent, leave-behind camper jacks, and, among other niceties, a self-contained toilet, because, unlike a bear, it’s not appropriate for us to shit in the woods.

    The ad asks $35K for each component or $70K for them as the Wonder Twin combo. We’re going for the combo since it’s just so darn cool, but let’s take a look at them one at a time.

    Based on the description in the ad, the truck alone is pretty neat. Powering the big beast is a 7.3-liter Powerstroke turbo-diesel V8. That offered 235 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque in this model year. Backing that up is a ZF S6-650 six-speed manual and 4WD with solid axles at both ends. That’s all pushed the truck a substantial 263,000 miles, but this is a stout drivetrain and it all appears well maintained and updated.

    The color of the matte-finish paint is described as “Lieutenant Dan” green, and the seller fitted new seals and a windshield before that was laid down. Tires are big knobbies, but oddly, the seller says they will be mounting even bigger meats “shortly.”

    The cabin seems clean and has later-model captain’s chairs with trail covers in front and a versatile folding bench in the back. Various outlets and a big stereo have also been added. In fact, there’s almost too much to mention here as the truck seems to have been obsessively updated and kept in the right state of affairs.

    On the other hand, the Scout camper is only 2 years old and looks darn near brand new. It sleeps six and offers an acrophobia-inducing collapsable ladder for external access to the tent on top as well as an internal hatch for alternate ingress. This is Scout’s top-of-the-line camper and is designed to offer off-grid comfort via a space heater, portable shower, and indoor/outdoor propane hookups. While also the largest of Scout’s offerings, the 1331-pound Kenai doesn’t overwhelm the big F250, making each a perfect complement to the other. That’s why we’re going with the $70,000 asking for the pair.

  • Cadillac aims high with new limited build programs

    General Motors is certainly no stranger to the notion of a custom-built car (the COPO Camaro started as just such a thing). While the mass-market assembly line makes it far more difficult to produce a truly bespoke modern automobile, that’s a problem that can be solved by throwing resources — say, $36,000 per car or so — at the problem. That was GM’s pitch for a very special series of 2024 CT5-V Blackwings, hand-assembled to spec for just 21 highly valuable customers. Whales, in other words. Big ones. 

    Cadillac has dabbled in serialized Blackwings before. Both the CT4- and CT5-V Blackwing were offered to enthusiasts who jockeyed to be among the first to pick up a numbered “Collectors’ Series” model, limited to 250 units each. The brand went back to the well for its 120th anniversary, introducing the notion of letting customers pick a particular year to commemorate with their builds. The 2024 20th Anniversary Edition gave Cadillac the opportunity to iterate one more time, celebrating 20 years of the V-Series with an almost no-holds-barred customization program.

    As if simple serialization weren’t difficult enough (tying a VIN to an individual build and customer early on is not trivial, believe it or not), this time around, Cadillac decided to incorporate the wider customization it is offering for its electric flagship coupe, the Celestiq. This essentially unlocks the order book, letting customers pick their options a la carte and choose from a much wider (though still factory-blended and easily sourced) color gamut.

    Theoretically, there was a color available for each year, meaning 20 customers could have walked away with entirely unique builds. But collectors are a predictable bunch, and one finish — black — was chosen by several customers, while others held out for something unique. During our tour, Cadillac had six customer cars in the shop. Six were complete: one in Kimono (below left), one in Chartreuse (below right, featuring a matte frosted finish), one in Abalone and one in Gauntlet. The two still being assembled were finished in Tactical and Coppertino.

    While these are all based on existing GM paint codes, the bodies all arrive at the Innovation Center painted black from the shop in Lansing. From there, it’s sanded and re-painted in the customer’s desired finish, checked again for any gaps or imperfections, and then reassembled on a “line” no bigger than a midsize car dealership. The assembly of a showroom-spec CT5-V Blackwing takes between 40 and 50 total labor hours spread around dozens or hundreds of employees; Plant Director Karsten Garbe says his team spends at least 4-5 times that painting, hand-assembling and validating the cars that come through his shop. 

    And Garbe would like a bigger, busier team. Celestiq was the toe in the proverbial water; Blackwing is proof that it can be done with customers who aren’t spending a quarter-million for a car. But realistically, the buyer who can afford to tack $36,000 on top of an already-marked-up Blackwing could probably afford it anyway.

    2017-2020 Fiat 124 Spider: Future Classic

    The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider held the promise of melding two automotive cultures: the romance of the Italians and the focused finesse of the Japanese.

    In simple terms, the Fiata, as it came to be called by aficionados, was in fact part Fiat, part Mazda, and all character. Unfortunately, the Miata MX-5 ND ruled the roost in this limited market. Mainstream consumers by this time were already convinced that the future was the SUV; a little two-seater with a stick shift and a rumbling ride wasn’t on too many wish lists.

    Of course, the Miata, constantly updated through the years, survives today. The Fiata closed up shop in 2020 after only four years. Fiat’s questionable reputation for reliability and build quality throughout the previous decades in America didn’t help to push the sporty Spider up the sales charts.

    Why is the Fiat 124 Spider a future classic?

    The affordable roadster (which is not to be confused with the original Fiat Spider that launched in the 1960s) landed on US shores in three trim levels: Classica, Lusso and the performance-oriented Abarth, with starting prices that ranged from $25,990 to $28,195.

    It was built alongside the Miata at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant in Japan. Comparisons of the two cars were expected, and voluminous: The Fiat used the same chassis, many of the same interior parts and even the same key fob as the Mazda. But the Spider had different tuning for its steering and suspension, and a different engine under the hood. Of course, both were convertibles.

    Weight was an issue. The Spider’s 1.4-liter, turbocharged inline-four was good for 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, but that made it 130 pounds heavier than its Japanese near-twin.

    Then there was turbo lag. One review said that the Fiata Classica’s best launch from 0 to 60 mph required 6.5 seconds, not as quick as the 5.8-second start recorded in a Miata Club.

    Fiat engineers were able to tame the roll of the Miata, but in doing so robbed the 124 of one of its more enviable traits: its tossability. The Fiat’s manual tranny received high marks, the automatic not so much.

    Wind noise with the Fiat’s soft top down was horrible, which was sad because the 124 was otherwise superb in highway driving. It had a more compliant suspension that the MX-5, and more sound-deadening padding. Nonetheless, tall/big people weren’t particularly happy in either car’s interiors; “cramped” was a polite way to describe head and shoulder room.

    Speaking of highway driving, an Autoblog review raved about the sounds of the top trim level Abarth, calling it “the only 124 available with the special Record Monza exhaust, and it makes the Fiat growl and snarl like only Italian cars can.”

    Standard safety features on the 2017 Fiat included antilock disc brakes, side airbags and stability and traction control. A rearview camera was available on all trims, while a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors could be ordered on the Lusso and Abarth via the Safety and Comfort package.

    The 124’s interior has a touch of baked-in Euro class, with soft-touch plastics, simple climate controls and a Mazda-sourced touchscreen. Fiat also claimed its model had a bigger trunk, but “bigger” in this case is something of an exaggeration: it measured 4.9 cubic feet compared to the Mazda’s 4.6.

    What is the ideal example of the Fiat 124 Spider?

    The 124 Abarth was billed by Fiat as the performance model. That boast was mitigated somewhat in 2019 when the Abarth’s 164-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four specs gave way to the Miata’s 181-hp 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine.

    Nonetheless, the Abarth served up 184 pound-feet of torque compared to the Miata’s 151 lb-ft. More importantly, the Abarth made its power down low, feeling punchier in the lower rpms.

    And the Abarth did add some real benefits on top of the lesser trims of the 124, including a rear limited-slip differential, upgraded shocks and sharper tuning for the steering and suspension (and the grittier exhaust note mentioned above).

    At the end of the day, the not-too-steep $3,000 price bump above the Classica made a slightly more convincing argument for choosing the Abarth, plus consider the gunmetal matte hood and scorpion Abarth badges fore and aft.

    Are there any good alternatives to the Fiat 124 Spider?

    Used Spiders can be pricey. A white automatic one-owner Abarth from 2017 with 33,000 miles prices at $23,000 at the time this was written; other 124 Spiders are listed at about $20,000.

    The alternatives were (and, in terms of the MX-5, still are) limited. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 come to mind as far as affordability, and they’re somewhat more refined in terms of ride and amenities.

    The Audi TT and Mini Cooper Roadster make sense for those looking to match the fun quotients of the Fiata for a higher price, and both have German roots.
