• Ferrari's 'Blue' Miami F1 Livery Sure Doesn't Look All That Blue

    Ferrari unveiled an off-one special livery for the Miami Grand Prix that has left Formula 1 fans universally underwhelmed. The venerated Italian brand will be running its traditional red race cars with added splashes of blue and new Hewlett-Packard logos. It’s undeniable that expectations were high last week when Ferrari teased that it would race a livery to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its presence in North America.

    Ferrari’s announcement last week mentioned blue and North America, which led everyone to immediately assume that the F1 team was preparing a North American Racing Team (NART) tribute livery. NART was created by Luigi Chinetti, the businessman who convinced Enzo Ferrari to sell his cars in the United States during the 1950s. The racing team was initially conceived as a marketing tool but became a force of its own in the American sports car racing scene.

    In F1, NART was also the protest moniker that Scuderia Ferrari raced under when John Surtees clinched the world championship in 1964. The FIA, the sport’s global governing body, refused to allow Ferarri to race the 250 LM in competiton. The Automobile Club d’Italia didn’t support the manufacturer’s case so Enzo Ferrari brazenly declared that Ferrari would never race in Italy’s colors again. Ferrari putting on NART’s American colors again would be timely, considering the paddock’s current conflict with the FIA.

    This narrative proved alluring enough for even the official Formula 1 website to feature a photo of John Surtees’ NART blue and white Ferrari 158 alongside last week’s announcement. This hopeful speculation happened despite Ferrari being completely transparent about what two shades of blue were getting put on the car, Azzurro La Plata and Azzurro Dino. These colors have no significant ties to NART.

    What we all ignored was Ferrari’s new title sponsorship deal with HP, its first naming rights deal since ending a decades-long partnership with Phillip Morris International. I understand that ink and toner don’t carry the same addictive quality as tobacco, but we should have known that Ferrari would make us all aware that they’re a tech billboard now. We dared to dream and once again got let down by HP.

  • Elon Musk Says He Still Wants To Grow Supercharger Network After Laying Off Supercharger Network Team

    Despite the fact Tesla CEO Elon Musk laid off pretty much the entire Supercharger team earlier this week, he says the automaker still plans to grow the network… sort of. Musk’s post on his social media site, X, comes just days after reports that the Austin, Texas-based automaker was cutting 500 jobs from its Supercharger unit as well as the group’s leader, Rebecca Tinucci.

    “Tesla still plans to grow the Supercharger network, just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansions of existing locations,” Musk posted on X.

    Basically, what I take this to mean is that if you were hoping for a Supercharger station closer to a specification location that isn’t there yet, you’re shit out of luck. This is an absolutely wild decision based purely on the fact that – honestly – Superchargers are winning the EV charging war by a fairly healthy margin. Now, just about every automaker has signed on to make their vehicles compatible with Superchargers and the NACS connector. I just don’t get it, man.

    That being said, there will still be some expansion. In response to a Tesla owner who asked if a specific Supercharger location currently under construction in Montana would actually go online, Musk posted. “It’s definitely going to open,” adding that “sites under construction will be completed and we will add additional Superchargers anywhere there are gaps.”

    I don’t know, dude. This all screams of cost-cutting desperation to me. How is Tesla going to both maintain and expand its current Supercharger locations while also expanding somewhat into other places? Keep in mind it’ll have to do all that with 500 fewer employees and no head of the ship.

    Along with the 500 Supercharger employees and Rebecca Tinucci, senior director of Tesla’s Supercharger business, Musk also laid off Daniel Ho, head of the new vehicles program. So, I guess new Tesla vehicles are going to take a backseat for a while. Who knows? Maybe he was just pissed about the Cybertruck rollout.

    Here’s what Musk said to employees in an email about the layoffs, according to Reuters:

    “Hopefully these actions are making it clear that we need to be absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction,” Musk wrote in the email, the report said. “While some on exec staff are taking this seriously, most are not yet doing so.”

    All of this comes on the heels of Tesla unveiling a disastrous first-quarter earnings report as sales continue to fall and the EV price war continues. The automaker posted a quarterly revenue decline for the first time since 2020. Oh, and it laid off 10 percent of its entire workforce a couple of weeks ago. Surely cutting 500 jobs from your most successful unit will solve these issues.

    سخنگوی این شرکت روز سه شنبه گفت، شرکت سوئدی خودروهای برقی Polestar Automotive انتشار نتایج مالی سه ماهه چهارم و سال 2023 خود را برای دومین بار به تاخیر می اندازد.

    Polestar تاریخ انتشار را اعلام نکرد اما گفت که همچنان قصد دارد نتایج مالی سه ماهه اول را در 23 می منتشر کند.

    این تأخیر تا حدودی به این دلیل است که شرکت به زمان بیشتری برای نهایی کردن صورت‌های مالی خود در مورد تحریفات حسابداری در سال‌های 2021 و 2022 نیاز دارد که در گزارش 2023 اصلاح خواهد شد.

    در نتیجه تجدید ارائه ها، شرکت انتظار دارد زیان خالص آن برای سال 2021 کمتر از 5 درصد کاهش یابد و برای سال 2022 کمتر از 5 درصد افزایش یابد.

  • New California Law Hopes To Stop Robotaxis From Dodging Traffic Tickets

    It’s no secret that legislation tends to lag behind technological and social advancements, but as technology advances at higher rates than ever before, legislation needs to react faster. Autonomous vehicles have been on California roads for years, but California law only allows enforcement of traffic violations for drivers. Since autonomous vehicles have no driver, they haven’t been subject to traffic enforcement, but two California bills aimed at changing that have passed the State Assembly’s Transportation Committee earlier this week.

    The two bills cover different aspects of autonomous vehicle legislation. Senator Dave Cortese’s bill SB-915 empowers California cities to write their own individual regulations relating to autonomous vehicles, and Representative Phil Ting’s AB-1777 aims to make the driverless car companies liable for moving violations that their cars commit on California roads. The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association which represents most major autonomous vehicle companies, unsurprisingly opposes both bills meant to hold its members accountable for the actions of their products. NBC Bay Area reports,

    The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, which represents major driverless car companies like Waymo and Cruise, opposes both bills, arguing Cortese’s attempts to give cities the ability to write their own laws could create a chaotic hodgepodge of regulations across the state that could stunt innovation.

    “Regulatory certainty is crucial to allow for companies to expend the type of resources they need to expend for companies to deploy to scale,” said Renée Gibson, the association’s director of government affairs. “So when you have the potential for hundreds of local jurisdictions to set up their own regulations, that creates a patchwork of (regulations) and that creates an incredible amount of uncertainty.”

    Cortese argues that since driverless cars have long argued their tech is superior to even human drivers and can adapt to all sorts of scenarios, he doesn’t understand why the prospect of having to program the cars to adhere to different rules in different cities would be too problematic.

    “How are taxis and rideshares doing it with human drivers,” he said. “Supposedly, this wealth of intellect that’s built into the computer chip and the coding is not going to be able to do the same damn thing? You can’t have it both ways.”

    Each of these proposed bills still has to get approved by their respective Appropriations Committees in the Assembly and Senate, and if approved they will go to a full vote later this summer. It’s shocking and downright reckless to me that autonomous vehicles have been operating without any real consequences for breaking laws that humans get ticketed for. Examples of violations that driverless cars are currently exempt from include running red lights, making illegal turns, and all other moving violations. If the bills pass, the new laws would take effect by July 1, 2026.
