Fred Beans Automotive Group has acquired four Abington, Pennsylvania dealerships, as well as a collision center from Rosenthal Automotive Organization. According to Automotive News, the dealerships Fred Beans bought include Acura, Honda, Hyundai and Mazda of Abington, with the collision center located in Fred Beans’s new Honda dealership.

It is not clear how much Fred Beans paid for those dealerships, as Fred Beans chose not to share the details of the deal with Automotive News. Fred Beans also wasted no time adding the Fred Beans name to the dealerships that Fred Beans bought. The deal closed Monday, and by Tuesday, Fred Beans already had the new signs up.

With the four dealerships that Fred Beans just purchased, Fred Beans now owns a total of 27 Fred Beans dealerships in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Fred Beans also owns two Fred Beans service centers, four Fred Beans rental locations, and a Fred Beans parts warehouse slash distribution center.

CEO Fred Beans founded the Fred Beans Automotive Group in 1975 and runs it with his daughters Beth Beans Gilbert, Barbara Beans and Jennifer Beans Keiser.

“This was an opportunity to grow our footprint in our target market, affording us the opportunity to have a strong presence at these new locations,” Beth Beans Gilbert told Automotive News. “We also see this expansion as a logical choice as we already have success selling the Hyundai brand, and we are adding three new strong brands to our inventory with Acura, Honda and Mazda.”

Kia EV9 GT performance three-row SUV to be revealed next year

A high-performance version of the Kia EV9 electric three-row SUV, to be badged the GT, has been confirmed for a January debut, and it will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds. This is according to Kia’s Investor Day presentation.

Kia said the new version of the SUV will have “enormous power output”—as yet unspecified—generated by a dual electric motor setup. It’s expected that the SUV will inherit a powertrain similar to that found in the smaller EV6 GT. As such, output would likely be around 576 horsepower at least, if not a little more to account for the EV9’s additional weight.

The upcoming EV9 GT will be 1.3 seconds faster to 60 mph than the EV9 GT-Line, and only 0.5 second slower compared to the EV6 GT, although it will likely be heavier than that model.

As a performance flagship, the EV9 GT will be fitted with all-wheel drive, and a “reinforced suspension and electronic braking system” set to provide “stable driving performance at high speeds.” Going by the EV6 GT, that suspension will probably have electronically adjustable damping. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see other upgrades such as a limited-slip differential, either electronic or mechanical, included, too.

At its meeting in South Korea, Kia, which is planning to introduce other GT versions of its EV line, confirmed that an updated version of the EV6 GT will debut later this year. The company has also confirmed Kia will launch six new mass market EV models in major locations by the end of the decade: the EV2, EV3, EV4, and EV5.

The EV3 subcompact SUV is expected by the end of this year, to start at about $30,000. By 2030, said Kia President and CEO Ho Sung Song, Kia aims to sell 1.6 million EVs, helped in that quest by concentrating on smaller, more affordable models and discontinuing some larger, less affordable models. The EV9 GT on the other hand, will surely be the most expensive version of the SUV, just as the EV6 GT is the most expensive version of that model.

  • Watch A Normie Spend 30 Minutes Losing His Mind Over New Car Trends

    Drew Gooden's Cybertruck rant

    Screenshot: Drew Gooden/YouTube

If you’re looking to learn something new, it’s usually a good idea to go to an expert on the subject. They’ve studied it for years, know the ins and outs and can explain it in a way that you’ll understand. For example, this video from an optical engineer explaining how to see better while driving at night. Entertainment doesn’t always have to be educational, though, and sometimes it’s fun to just sit back and listen to someone say a bunch of things you already know and agree with, like this formerly anti-union Volkswagen employee. It’s cathartic.

The video below is definitely the latter, so if you’re hoping to learn something, this isn’t the video for you. If you’re frustrated with new car trends, though, it’s exactly the kind of thing you’ll enjoy watching. It’s just a regular guy, not an enthusiast, slowly losing his mind over various trends in the auto industry. We’ll also give him a bonus point for being the rare successful YouTuber who owns something other than a Tesla. We probably would have picked something other than a Hyundai Sonata, but you can do a lot worse with your YouTube money.

Considering the video is only 30 minutes long (which is still long, but you can always watch it at 2x speed and cut it down to 15 minutes), it’s impressive how many topics he manages to touch on.

New transmission controls that forego a traditional PRNDL shifter? Check. Increases in distracted driving and road deaths? Check. All the controls being built into touchscreens at the expense of buttons? Check. Retracting door handles that get frozen stuck in the winter? Check. Everyone’s headlights being unnecessarily blinding at night? Check. The arms race to build bigger and bigger cars? Check.

And that’s only in the first 15 minutes. He also includes a clip from Not Just Bikes, clowns on the Cybertruck and then rents one to see if it really is as bad as it sounds. As previously mentioned, you probably already know everything he covers in the video, but if you share his frustrations, who cares? Enjoy Drew slowly going mad over everything so you don’t have to.

  • Fisker Claims 4 Automakers Are In Talks To Buy Out The Struggling EV Startup

    Fisker Ocean

    Photo: Fisker

We learned last month that despite Fisker beginning production on its Ocean SUV, the startup automaker lost nearly half a billion dollars last year and desperately needed a bailout. Nissan was reportedly in negotiations to give Fisker $400 million, but that apparently fell through, so it looked like bankruptcy was the only option. Don’t you worry, though, Fisker is totally back, baby! In fact, Business Insider reports that a total of four automakers are currently competing to buy the struggling startup.

Founder Henrik Fisker reportedly shared this information with employees at an all-hands meeting on Thursday. Fisker didn’t name the automakers that are interested, but he did tell the staff, “We still have some time to get other offers on Fisker. We do have four car companies that have signed NDAs. However, they obviously need time to get to some diligence.”

How long it will take for those companies to do their due diligence is unclear, but considering we already know Fisker lost millions of dollars in customer payments, we’re not exactly confident that it has its books in order. If this is actually going to happen, there’s a good chance it’s going to take a while.

Apparently, there’s already been an offer, which Fisker reportedly rejected because they didn’t show up at the table with enough money. If there’s plenty of interest from other automakers, we kind of understand holding out for more, but at the same time, Fisker reportedly told staff earlier in the week that it could file for bankruptcy in the next 30 days if it didn’t find more cash. As of April 16, the company’s filings claimed it only had $54 million on hand and “believes that its available liquidity will not be sufficient to meet its current obligations.”

So maybe taking the low offer would have been the smart thing to do, but hopefully, for the sake of the employees, one of the four companies that is currently in negotiations with Fisker will make a better offer and then fix everything that’s wrong with the Ocean.

  • NHTSA probes Tesla recall of 2 million vehicles over Autopilot

NHTSA probes Tesla recall of 2 million vehicles over Autopilot

WASHINGTON — U.S. auto safety regulators said Friday they have opened an investigation into whether Tesla’s recall of more than 2 million vehicles announced in December to install new Autopilot safeguards is adequate.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it was opening an investigation after the agency identified concerns due to crash events after vehicles had the recall software update installed “and results from preliminary NHTSA tests of remedied vehicles.”

The agency’s new probe comes after it closed its nearly three-year investigation into Autopilot, saying it found evidence that “Tesla’s weak driver engagement system was not appropriate for Autopilot’s permissive operating capabilities” that result in a “critical safety gap.”

NHTSA also cited Tesla’s statement “that a portion of the remedy both requires the owner to opt in and allows a driver to readily reverse it.”

The agency said Tesla has issued software updates to address issues that appear related to its concerns but has not made them “a part of the recall or otherwise determined to remedy a defect that poses an unreasonable safety risk.”

Tesla said in December’s its largest-ever recall covering 2.03 million U.S. vehicles — or nearly all of its vehicles on U.S. roads — was to better ensure drivers pay attention when using its advanced driver assistance system.

The new recall investigation covers Model Y, X, S, 3 and Cybertruck vehicles in the U.S. equipped with Autopilot produced between the 2012 and 2024 model years, NHTSA said.

Tesla said in December Autopilot’s software system controls “may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse” and could increase the risk of a crash.

The auto safety agency disclosed Friday that during its Autopilot safety probe it first launched in August 2021 it identified at least 13 Tesla crashes involving one or more death and many more involving serious injuries in which “foreseeable driver misuse of the system played an apparent role.”

NHTSA also on Friday raised concerns about Tesla’s Autopilot name “may lead drivers to believe that the automation has greater capabilities than it does and invite drivers to overly trust the automation.”

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In February, Consumer Reports, a nonprofit organization that evaluates products and services, said its testing of Tesla’s Autopilot recall update found changes did not adequately address many safety concerns raised by NHTSA and urged the agency to require the automaker to take “stronger steps,” saying Tesla’s recall “addresses minor inconveniences rather than fixing the real problems.”

Tesla’s Autopilot is intended to enable cars to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within their lane, while enhanced Autopilot can assist in changing lanes on highways but does not make vehicles autonomous.

One component of Autopilot is Autosteer, which maintains a set speed or following distance and works to keep a vehicle in its driving lane.

Tesla said in December it did not agree with NHTSA’s analysis but would deploy an over-the-air software update that will “incorporate additional controls and alerts to those already existing on affected vehicles to further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged.”

NHTSA’s then top official, Ann Carlson, said in December the agency probe determined that more needed to be done to ensure drivers are engaged when Autopilot is in use. “One of the things we determined is that drivers are not always paying attention when that system is on,” Carlson said.

NHTSA opened its August 2021 probe of Autopilot after identifying more than a dozen crashes in which Tesla vehicles hit stationary emergency vehicles.

NHTSA said in December it found Autopilot “can provide inadequate driver engagement and usage controls that can lead to foreseeable misuse.”

Separately, since 2016, NHTSA has opened more than 40 Tesla special crash investigations in cases where driver systems such as Autopilot were suspected of being used, with 23 crash deaths reported to date.

Tesla’s recall includes increasing prominence of visual alerts and disengaging of Autosteer if drivers do not respond to inattentiveness warnings and additional checks upon engaging Autosteer. Tesla said it will restrict Autopilot use for one week if significant improper usage is detected.

Tesla disclosed in October the U.S. Justice Department issued subpoenas related to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Autopilot. Reuters reported in October 2022 that Tesla was under criminal investigation.

Tesla in February 2023 recalled 362,000 U.S. vehicles to update its FSD Beta software after NHTSA said the vehicles did not adequately adhere to traffic safety laws and could cause crashes.
