    We learned last month that despite Fisker beginning production on its Ocean SUV, the startup automaker lost nearly half a billion dollars last year and desperately needed a bailout. Nissan was reportedly in negotiations to give Fisker $400 million, but that apparently fell through, so it looked like bankruptcy was the only option. Don’t you worry, though, Fisker is totally back, baby! In fact, Business Insider reports that a total of four automakers are currently competing to buy the struggling startup.

    Founder Henrik Fisker reportedly shared this information with employees at an all-hands meeting on Thursday. Fisker didn’t name the automakers that are interested, but he did tell the staff, “We still have some time to get other offers on Fisker. We do have four car companies that have signed NDAs. However, they obviously need time to get to some diligence.”

    How long it will take for those companies to do their due diligence is unclear, but considering we already know Fisker lost millions of dollars in customer payments, we’re not exactly confident that it has its books in order. If this is actually going to happen, there’s a good chance it’s going to take a while.

    Apparently, there’s already been an offer, which Fisker reportedly rejected because they didn’t show up at the table with enough money. If there’s plenty of interest from other automakers, we kind of understand holding out for more, but at the same time, Fisker reportedly told staff earlier in the week that it could file for bankruptcy in the next 30 days if it didn’t find more cash. As of April 16, the company’s filings claimed it only had $54 million on hand and “believes that its available liquidity will not be sufficient to meet its current obligations.”

    So maybe taking the low offer would have been the smart thing to do, but hopefully, for the sake of the employees, one of the four companies that is currently in negotiations with Fisker will make a better offer and then fix everything that’s wrong with the Ocean.

    WASHINGTON — U.S. auto safety regulators said Friday they have opened an investigation into whether Tesla’s recall of more than 2 million vehicles announced in December to install new Autopilot safeguards is adequate.

    The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it was opening an investigation after the agency identified concerns due to crash events after vehicles had the recall software update installed “and results from preliminary NHTSA tests of remedied vehicles.”

    The agency’s new probe comes after it closed its nearly three-year investigation into Autopilot, saying it found evidence that “Tesla’s weak driver engagement system was not appropriate for Autopilot’s permissive operating capabilities” that result in a “critical safety gap.”

    NHTSA also cited Tesla’s statement “that a portion of the remedy both requires the owner to opt in and allows a driver to readily reverse it.”

    The agency said Tesla has issued software updates to address issues that appear related to its concerns but has not made them “a part of the recall or otherwise determined to remedy a defect that poses an unreasonable safety risk.”

    Tesla said in December’s its largest-ever recall covering 2.03 million U.S. vehicles — or nearly all of its vehicles on U.S. roads — was to better ensure drivers pay attention when using its advanced driver assistance system.

    The new recall investigation covers Model Y, X, S, 3 and Cybertruck vehicles in the U.S. equipped with Autopilot produced between the 2012 and 2024 model years, NHTSA said.

    Tesla said in December Autopilot’s software system controls “may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse” and could increase the risk of a crash.

    The auto safety agency disclosed Friday that during its Autopilot safety probe it first launched in August 2021 it identified at least 13 Tesla crashes involving one or more death and many more involving serious injuries in which “foreseeable driver misuse of the system played an apparent role.”

    NHTSA also on Friday raised concerns about Tesla’s Autopilot name “may lead drivers to believe that the automation has greater capabilities than it does and invite drivers to overly trust the automation.”

    Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    In February, Consumer Reports, a nonprofit organization that evaluates products and services, said its testing of Tesla’s Autopilot recall update found changes did not adequately address many safety concerns raised by NHTSA and urged the agency to require the automaker to take “stronger steps,” saying Tesla’s recall “addresses minor inconveniences rather than fixing the real problems.”

    Tesla’s Autopilot is intended to enable cars to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within their lane, while enhanced Autopilot can assist in changing lanes on highways but does not make vehicles autonomous.

    One component of Autopilot is Autosteer, which maintains a set speed or following distance and works to keep a vehicle in its driving lane.

    Tesla said in December it did not agree with NHTSA’s analysis but would deploy an over-the-air software update that will “incorporate additional controls and alerts to those already existing on affected vehicles to further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged.”

    NHTSA’s then top official, Ann Carlson, said in December the agency probe determined that more needed to be done to ensure drivers are engaged when Autopilot is in use. “One of the things we determined is that drivers are not always paying attention when that system is on,” Carlson said.

    NHTSA opened its August 2021 probe of Autopilot after identifying more than a dozen crashes in which Tesla vehicles hit stationary emergency vehicles.

    NHTSA said in December it found Autopilot “can provide inadequate driver engagement and usage controls that can lead to foreseeable misuse.”

    Separately, since 2016, NHTSA has opened more than 40 Tesla special crash investigations in cases where driver systems such as Autopilot were suspected of being used, with 23 crash deaths reported to date.

    Tesla’s recall includes increasing prominence of visual alerts and disengaging of Autosteer if drivers do not respond to inattentiveness warnings and additional checks upon engaging Autosteer. Tesla said it will restrict Autopilot use for one week if significant improper usage is detected.

    Tesla disclosed in October the U.S. Justice Department issued subpoenas related to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Autopilot. Reuters reported in October 2022 that Tesla was under criminal investigation.

    Tesla in February 2023 recalled 362,000 U.S. vehicles to update its FSD Beta software after NHTSA said the vehicles did not adequately adhere to traffic safety laws and could cause crashes.

    There are some anniversaries that are worth celebrating, and the “platinum anniversary” of a Martian dick is definitely one of them. Way back in 2004, when I was still a high-school junior, the scientists at NASA in charge of the Spirit rover were doing pretty much the same thing I was; scribblin’ dicks on shit. My art was on the walls of the boy’s locker room at Gull Lake High School, but these space geniuses were crudely shuffling a phallus into the surface of a planet 186 million miles away. One small step for man, one giant dick for mankind.

    NASA scientists, according to Futurism, claim this is a “standard rover turning maneuver” and have done similar drawings with the tracks of the earlier Opportunity and later Curiosity rovers as well. So Mars actually has three dicks! It’s a regular sausage fest on the fourth planet from the sun, eh?

    Personally I think the NASA engineers are just covering up for their own juvenile programming. Yeah, of course the space robots turn around in a way that draws a the family jewels. That’s absolutely normal and expected. And I’m sure they also have standard programmatic maneuvers that spell out “Wash Me.” That’s totally believable.

    Back in 2013, when the images were first released, NBC News had this to say as a way of explaining the frank and beans:

    All those rovers have six wheels, three on each side, and they leave behind two parallel tracks when they’re traveling in a straight line. When the rover has to make a turn, the wheels rotate in place to put the robot in the desired direction for the next leg of its trek. If the turn is significant enough, you get a nice set of circles at the end of a pair of parallel tracks.

    I, for one, appreciate that these NASA employees are having fun with their work. Sure these rovers need to turn in one way or another, and a dick is just as easy as any other shape to articulate, so why not?

    The centerpiece of the auction is this 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Aravis Special Cabriolet, one of only four ever made and one of only two based on the supercharged 57C. (Bugatti made 710 Type 57 cars in total, with 96 being the 57C.) With gorgeous coachbuilt bodywork by Gangloff, this Type 57C was delivered new to Bugatti works driver Maurice Trintignant, who would go on to spend 14 years in Formula 1. Just months after delivery, Trintignant entered his new Bugatti in the Grand Prix du Comminges, where he came in 11th place overall.

    After Trintignant sold the car in 1947, it went through a few owners before being purchased by the Mullins in 2002. The Mullins sent it to Sargent Metal Works in Vermont for a full concours-level restoration, and Trintignant made multiple trips to California to ensure the restoration would be as accurate as possible. The car was finished in 2005, and that year it was awarded First in Class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Chassis number 57768, it has the numbers-matching engine and the original bodywork.

    In the late 1930s as today, there is little that compares, both in terms of performance and style, to a Bugatti. As an original Type 57C, possessing its matching-numbers engine and exclusive Aravis bodywork, this is an exceptionally rare and immensely desirable example of what is undisputedly one of the greatest prewar automobiles.

    With its ideal specification, well-documented provenance, period competition history, and prize-winning expert restoration, 57768 presents an opportunity to acquire what is very likely the finest example of the legendary Type 57 Aravis – a masterpiece that represents the embodiment of the Bugatti marque.

    While overall sales numbers are a solid indicator of an automaker’s success, another metric can show how well its new vehicles resonate with buyers on the ground. iSeeCars recently released a list of the fastest- and slowest-selling new car companies on the market, and a handful of brands appear to have some catching up to do.

    Lincoln landed the “top spot” among slow-selling brands, taking an average of 82.6 days to move inventory. Infiniti wasn’t much better, at 79.8 days, and Buick came third with 79 days to sell.

    iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer noted that the fastest-selling brands, which include Toyota, Alfa Romeo, and Cadillac, likely move inventory because they resonate with buyers’ desire for value and a compelling product. The study also noted that seeing GMC, Ford, and Ram so low on the list likely indicates slowing truck sales, which comprise a significant portion of those brands’ numbers. It’s also possible that buyers are turned off by higher prices from those brands.

    Fast-selling new car brands also appeared on the used car list, where Honda, Lexus, and Toyota dominated. Unfortunately for Lincoln, it also made the slow-selling used list, between Maserati as the slowest and Alfa Romeo in third.

    iSeeCars’ analysis also examined EV and hybrid sales and found that hybrids tend to sell much faster than their electric counterparts. In March 2024, new hybrids took an average of 49.5 days to sell, while EVs took 70.6 days. That again brings us to the price and value arguments, where hybrids are significantly less expensive than EVs, though charging and range concerns also likely play a role.

    Genesis is giving the GV70, one of its best-selling models, a round of mid-cycle updates for the 2026 model year. The SUV gets subtle exterior design changes largely centered around the front end and additional tech features in the cabin including a huge OLED screen.

    While the overall silhouette remains the same, several small design details set the updated GV70 apart from the model currently found in showrooms. The most obvious change is the grille, which now features a dual-weave mesh finish with bright accents. Genesis gave the headlights a new-look design, and it fitted the front bumper with a wider air dam as well as a bright piece of trim that mimics a skid plate.

    More subtle changes are found out back. Look closely, and you’ll spot redesigned lights that now incorporate the turn signals. The rear-view camera and the camera that transmits footage to the digital center mirror live under the roof-mounted spoiler for a more streamlined look (and, presumably, better visibility), and the GV70 gains newly-designed 19-inch wheels with a Dark Hyper Silver finish and five split spokes.

    Buyers in some markets will be able to order a Sport package. It bundles a double-layer grille, bigger front air intakes, a dark-chrome-finished rear diffuser, and 21-inch wheels, among other features. Sport models also gain a flat-bottom steering wheel and orange stitching.

    The biggest change inside is positioned right in front of the driver. Genesis fused the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system’s display into a single, 27-inch OLED screen on the dashboard. It also redesigned the center console: the upper part houses touch-sensitive buttons and a volume knob, while the climate control system buttons get moved down and grouped into a separate touch-sensitive display.

    Genesis made no mention of mechanical updates; it simply noted that full specifications will be unveiled in the coming weeks. As of this writing, the GV70 comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s turbocharged to 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. Next is a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V6 rated at 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive comes standard with both engines.

    The updated Genesis GV70 will go on sale in South Korea in May 2024. There’s no word on when the order book will open on the American market, but a company spokesperson confirmed to Autoblog that the model will go on sale in the United States for the 2026 model year.
