• 'Fallout' TV show's most interesting car hides in the background of episode 1

    Amazon MGM Studios aired the first season of its new TV show “Fallout.” It’s based on the long-running video game series that takes place in an alternative universe based on 1950s ideas of futurism, with it all leading up to all-out thermonuclear war and the aftermath. So to fit the look, any scenes that take place before the nuclear war feature ’50s dress, political ideology, and, of course, automobiles. Most of the cars in the show are actual production vehicles from the time period. One of the main characters, Cooper Howard, drives a gorgeous yellow Kaiser Darrin, and there’s even a scene that showcases the car’s super cool sliding pocket doors. A Messerschmitt tandem bubble car also makes an appearance (and there are lookalikes that you can find in the game). But the most interesting and unique car shows up in the first episode, and amazingly, it’s hidden in the background of various shots.

    It doesn’t take long to spot it, as it appears in the first few minutes of the show. These scenes start at a birthday party just before the bombs drop, and it’s most visible in the shot at top when Howard takes off on horseback with his daughter in search of safety. They race past a big bright red roadster of some sort, with gleaming side-exit exhaust and a rear fin reminiscent of some period race cars. That vehicle isn’t made specifically for the show. It’s the Plymouth XNR concept from 1960 – or at least it’s a replica; more on that in a minute.

    The actual 1960 Plymouth XNR concept has a heaping helping of hypnotizing history. It was designed by Virgil Exner (hence the XNR name), who worked at Pontiac, Studebaker, and most famously, Chrysler Corporation. He started at Chrysler with concept cars, and the first production cars credited to him were the “Forward Look” models that included the original C-300 that would eventually inspire the 2005 Chrysler 300. 

    The styling is seriously wild. As we mentioned, it has asymmetric cues from race cars of the time, but amplified with the hood scoop that leads into a long rising cowl. The exhaust only comes out on the driver side, and then the rear has a sort of chrome star tying the rear fin in with the pseudo bumper. The radical looking fenders also appeared on the original 1960 Valiant, which was quickly placed under the Plymouth brand, with Dodge getting its own version called Lancer. The XNR even uses the Valiant’s chassis according to Motor Trend (which has an excellent, detailed look at the car from the sadly defunct Motor Trend Classic magazine).

    On top of the wild looks from designer royalty, the XNR was actually a fully functional car. It had a 170-cubic-inch (or about 2.8L in metric displacement) 250-horsepower inline-six with a three-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. And while it looks as though it only has a driver seat, there is a passenger seat hidden under a removable body panel. It also featured independent front suspension with torsion springs and a live rear axle with leaf springs. Those rear leaf springs were even tidily fit to the curve of the rear body (or probably more likely, the body fit to the springs)

    When Chrysler was done with the car, it began a wild journey, first going to Italy and Carrozzeria Ghia, the company that built the body. It eventually went to multiple other owners, including at one point the Shah of Iran. It was eventually found by Karim Edde, who discovered it in Lebanon in the ’80s and had to move it about to keep it safe as civil war broke out. It was then restored by RM Restorations, part of what’s now the RM Sotheby’s auction house, in the late 2000s. Following its restoration, it was shown at Pebble Beach in 2011 where it won the Gran Turismo award, which meant it was added as a drivable car in the video game series including the latest “Gran Turismo 7.” It’s actually quite fun to drive, especially with the high-revving engine. The game shows redline as being just shy of 8,000 rpm.

    And that brings us to today, where the car has appeared in “Fallout.” And this is where we’re left with questions that haven’t been fully answered. You see, in addition to the original XNR, at least one replica has been produced by Gotham Garage, the custom car shop featured in Netflix’s “Car Masters: Rust to Riches.” That replica is now at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. We reached out to the PR agency for Petersen to ask if their car was used for the show, and they said it was not. HotCars reported that Gotham Garage was looking at building another replica, but it’s not clear if that ever materialized. We also reached out to Amazon for details but never got a reply. So either the car in the show was the original, or this is the mysterious second replica. There’s also the outside chance it’s computer generated, but we doubt it. Besides looking especially convincing in multiple shots and angles, it would seem odd to pick this very specific car for a CGI background piece.

    Regardless, the XNR, be it the original, CGI or some faithful reproduction on Gotham Garage’s part, is a really cool car, and it’s neat to see it appear in a big TV show (and a good one, coming from this fan of the Fallout games) from one of the major studios. And we’re always happy to talk about a sweet ride.

    Excited for the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser? We are too. This is a profoundly different SUV than the last Land Cruiser, for better and for worse. It’s a lot cheaper, for one, but that’s because it’s a smaller, less sophisticated off-roader that may indeed be less likely to survive 30 years of hard life somewhere in the Sahara. For suburban America, the new one should probably be A-OK. It’s still a Toyota after all.

    Specifically, it’s a Toyota built on the increasingly ubiquitous truck platform that also underpins the Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, new 4Runner, Lexus GX and, yes, the “real” Land Cruiser sold overseas that we sort of get as the Lexus LX. The new Land Cruiser is most similar to the GX, though, which you can tell just by looking at them. The Land Cruiser obviously isn’t as lux inside, has five seats only and is exclusively offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that gets laughably better fuel economy than the old Land Cruiser as well as the GX. It also doesn’t offer the GX Overtrail’s trick KDSS automatically disconnecting stabilizer bars, but counters with a manually disconnecting bar that contributes to the Land Cruiser living up to its off-roading heritage. 

    There are two variants available (plus a loaded First Edition) that basically boil down to stripped-down, old-school off-roader (the Land Cruiser 1958) and new-school, luxury-tinged off-roader (literally just “Land Cruiser”). They have different styling, especially in regard to their headlights, and you can’t get the disconnecting stabilizer bar on the 1958, but the biggest difference are their interiors. In short, the $55,000 1958 has rock-hard plastics that would disappoint in a $25,000 Corolla; the “Land Cruiser” lives up to its price. That, as well as many missing or unavailable features, makes the 1958 a questionable purchase given how much you can get for that same price in other SUVs, including the upcoming new 4Runner. As for the “Land Cruiser,” they really need to come up with a better trim level name, but it also lives up to all the hype.

    What are the Land Cruiser interior and in-car technology like?

    This question really depends on the version you get. While the design is common, the 1958 and “Land Cruiser” trim level differ greatly in terms of interior materials, features and technology. While the “Land Cruiser” has padded SofTex simulated leather on the dash, doors and center console leg rests, the 1958 has rock-hard plastic. The door armrests are even rock-hard plastic. We love the sturdy, throwback gray upholstery, but this is still an SUV costing over $56,000, and considering what you’ll likely get in a comparably priced Toyota 4Runner, let alone a Jeep Grand Cherokee, this interior just seems cheap. Again, no issues with the “Land Cruiser,” which looks and feels as upmarket as its price suggests.

    In terms of technology, the 1958 has an 8-inch touchscreen, while the “Land Cruiser” and First Edition have a 12.3-inch screen. Both run the same user interface, albeit with more features in the upper trims, which is getting a key update for Apple CarPlay that keeps the system’s menu icons permanently docked on-screen. That had been our primary complaint about Toyota’s otherwise agreeable infotainment system. The 1958 also has a smaller digital instrument cluster flanked by analog gauges, while the other trims have a full-screen cluster with no analog gauges.

    How big is the Land Cruiser?

    The new Land Cruiser is a considerably smaller SUV than the previous-generation sold in the United States. That’s because it’s really the next-generation Land Cruiser Prado that has been sold for decades in other markets (our Lexus GX has been related to it, which continues to be the case). It is 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter in overall length, which makes it much easier to maneuver in tighter spots off road and while parking. It’s also a whopping 800 pounds lighter despite packing a hybrid battery.

    Speaking of which, that battery prevents the Land Cruiser from offering the third-row seat you’ll find in most Lexus GXs. They take up the same space in the cargo area, which means the Land Cruiser also has the same hand-width of height tacked onto the floor, reducing overall space. The good news is that there’s still a ton of cargo space further benefiting from a big, boxy shape. Toyota hasn’t released an official volume figure, but expect it to be around 40 cubic feet.

    For anything that won’t fit inside, the “Land Cruiser” has traditional raised roof rails you can use for whatever gear you see fit. There’s also a big, platform-type rack available. Regrettably you can’t get rails with the 1958, meaning you’ll have to pony up for that $1,400 big rack or find an aftermarket unit that works with the fixed roof mounting points.

    What are the Land Cruiser fuel economy and performance specs?

    The Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four and a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Total system output is a respectable 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque sent through a full-time four-wheel drive system. That puts the new model at a 55-horsepower deficit to the previous one, but thanks to the power of turbocharging and electric motors, the new Land Cruiser is up 64 pound-feet of torque. Towing maxes out at 6,000 pounds, a number that will come as a disappointment for many, since the previous Land Cruiser was rated for 8,100 pounds.

    EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 22 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined. That’s a far cry from the 27 mpg combined Toyota originally touted when it announced the new Land Cruiser, but it’s still a laughable improvement over its 14-mpg predecessor. It’s also much better than the 17-mpg Lexus GX, which has a non-hybrid turbo V6.

    What’s the Land Cruiser like to drive?

    We only got the briefest of chances to drive the new Land Cruiser on road, and even then, it was a 1958. Our quick, grade-heavy jaunt did the hybrid powertrain no favors, but this performance-oriented hybrid seems abundantly up to the task of moving a little over 5,000 pounds of Land Cruiser. Highway passing should be easy. Road holding seemed to be commendable given the body-on-frame structure, off-road-oriented suspension and high-profile all-season tires. Body roll isn’t excessive, steering is precise with appropriate weighting (if there’s some added in Sport mode, I didn’t really notice), and the well-sorted damping didn’t have the body bounding about in mid-corner bumps during our drive. That said, there’s no escaping the fact it’s a body-on-frame truck. There are the telltale wiggles and jiggles over bumps, and much like the mechanically related Sequoia, I would suspect that the available 20-inch wheels may amplify that sensation. A Jeep Grand Cherokee definitely rides better.

    Off road, the Land Cruiser has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, along with approach, breakover and departure angles of 31 degrees, 25 degrees and 22 degrees, respectively (the 1958’s approach is 30 degrees). Most of those figures would be better than the last Land Cruiser, but not quite as good as the current 4Runner. All told, the Land Cruiser is one of the better SUVs for actually off-roading, largely because it’s a literal SUV, with body-on-frame construction.  The key differentiator between Land Cruiser versions is the presence of the new manually disconnecting stabilizer bar that improves wheel articulation. Although the e-KDSS system in the Lexus GX Overtrail is a more sophisticated automated disconnect system with benefits both on- and off-road, it’s also more complicated and makes it harder (and more expensive) for those hoping to modify their suspension. The manual disconnection is better for that, and it still does wonders while traversing the gnarly off-road events.

    What is the 2024 Land Cruiser price?

    The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will start at $57,345, including the $1,095 destination charge. That’s $30,000 cheaper than the last Land Cruiser, and while a substantially different vehicle with a lot less standard equipment, it’s still the lowest-priced Land Cruiser in 20 years. That said, it’s still awfully pricey. That base price will net you a mid-grade Jeep Grand Cherokee with far more equipment and much nicer interior; the significantly upgraded “Land Cruiser” trim level better suits its price, but it’s still in the same ballpark as the plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk and six-cylinder Land Rover Defender 110 S. In other words, value is not the Land Cruiser’s calling card. 

    There are two trim levels, or “grades” in Toyota parlance, plus a loaded First Edition for early adopters. The 1958 acknowledges when the Land Cruiser first arrived in the United States and serves as the base model, complete with appropriately retro – the circular headlights give it away – front-end styling. It is pictured in beige below. The plainly named “Land Cruiser” is the upgrade trim with far nicer interior materials, extra creature comforts, more off-road technologies/equipment and more modern front-end styling, including horizontally arranged LED head- and accent lights. The First Edition basically adds all the “Land Cruiser’s” extra standard features as well as its optional packages, but swaps in the 1958’s round headlights.

    What are the Land Cruiser safety ratings and driver assistance features?

    Just like all new Toyota models these days, the company’s Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system comes standard, which gives you the full assortment of driver assist controls. This includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, road sign recognition, automatic high beams, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems, and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering steering assist.

    The Land Cruiser has yet not been crash-tested by a third party.

    2024 Nissan Qashqai gets Ariya-inspired face in Europe

    For a few model years, the Nissan Rogue had a smaller sidekick called Rogue Sport. The model wasn’t directly replaced in our market, but the European-market Qashqai it traced its roots to returned for a new generation in 2021 and has just received a round of updates.

    Visually, the biggest changes are found up front. Nissan gave the Qashqai a new-look design that borrows styling cues from the electric Ariya crossover. Gone is the Juke-inspired look with the bright U-shaped grille; the face-lifted Qashqai receives a much wider grille that Nissan explains is inspired by ancient Japanese armor scales, and sharp-looking headlights positioned below thin LED daytime running lights. The changes made to the back end are largely limited to updated lights with four individual elements mounted under a clear lens.

    The usual assortment of new alloy wheel designs (ranging from 18 to 20 inches) and additional paint colors rounds out the list of exterior updates. Five of the available exterior colors can be ordered with a contrasting black roof (pictured in our gallery) for a two-tone look.

    While the interior’s basic layout stays largely unchanged, Nissan made several trim- and technology-related updates to the Qashqai. Some of the upper trim levels ship with Alcantara upholstery on the dashboard, door panels, and central armrest, for example, and there’s new plastic trim with a metal-like appearance on the center console. The surround-view camera system receives a 3D function, and there’s an invisible hood view function that shows the driver the position of the front wheels to facilitate the task of avoiding wheel-ruining curbs.

    Nissan offers the 2024 Qashqai with two drivetrains. One is a mild-hybrid system that hasn’t been detailed yet and that will likely be offered in two states of tune. The second is an unusual hybrid system that consists of a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 1.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The triple’s role is that of a generator: it creates electricity that gets sent to the motor, the battery pack, or both. The motor drives the wheels directly, so there’s no transmission and the Qashqai drives like an EV (complete with a one-pedal mode).

    Pricing information for the updated Qashqai will be announced later in 2024, and the model will be built in Sunderland, England. Nothing suggests that the crossover will return to the United States as the second-generation Rogue Sport in the foreseeable future, however.

    Two airliners almost collided on a runway at Reagan National Airport just outside of Washington, D.C. on Thursday morning. A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 was cleared to taxi across a runway, while a JetBlue Embraer ERJ-190 was about to take off on the same runway. WTOP reports the potential disaster was averted as the planes were within 400 feet of each other. While no one was hurt and no aircraft was damaged, the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.

    The recording of air traffic control communications highlights the crucial error that was made and the frantic dash to correct it once a controller spotted it. A ground controller cleared the Southwest flight to cross Runway 4. Just a few seconds later, a tower controller cleared the JetBlue flight to take off on Runway 4. When it quickly became clear that the planes were headed for each other, the ground and tower desperately called over the radio, “JetBlue 1554, Stop!” and “Southwest, Stop! Southwest 2937!” Both planes stopped and eventually departed the airport safely, arriving at their destinations on time.

    This incident at Reagan National isn’t a one-off occurrence in a vacuum. There’s a nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers, which has led to terrible working conditions for those tasked with such a vital job. The reports of the controller falling asleep on the job and showing up to work either drunk or under the influence of drugs due to stress while on the clock are worrying. According to the FAA, there have only been 31 runway incursions per one million takeoffs and landings. However, if only one of those near-misses becomes a crash, it would be catastrophic.

    Formula 1 sessions can be halted for all kinds of reasons, including damaged barriers, severe weather and even literal dragons on track. Now, however, the Chinese Grand Prix has been marred by a new phenomenon: spontaneous combustion of the grass surrounding the Shanghai International Circuit.

    During free practice one in China, a red flag was waved and the session paused when a patch of grass near the track set on fire. A similar phenomenon then occurred in the first round of Sprint Qualifying at the track, forcing Formula 1 to delay the second qualifying session for this weekend’s sprint race.

    Now, the FIA has launched a probe into what could be causing the mysterious fires at the Shanghai International Circuit, reports Autosport. Theories so far have included sparks kicked up by the 2024 cars, methane released from the swamp the Shanghai International Circuit is built on and paint used to jazz up the circuit. As Autosport explains:

    One theory is that because the Shanghai track is built on a swamp, methane gas could be seeping up through the ground – which is then being ignited and causing the fires.

    Another idea is that the grass has been chemically treated to enhance its looks, and it is this that is causing the problem.

    However, the FIA’s initial physical inspections on Friday did not shed any great light on the situation, as it is understood there were no unusual smells or evidence of anything unexpected in the area.

    During qualifying, there was a downpour across the circuit, which will hopefully dampen the ground and make future fires over the weekend less likely. However, it would be mighty embarrassing for F1 and the Chinese Grand Prix promoters if spontaneous combustion keeps affecting running over the weekend, which still has a second practice session, sprint race and Sunday’s grand prix to run.

    In an attempt to ensure this doesn’t happen, the FIA has launched a full probe into the problem. F1’s governing body will reportedly conduct a “more detailed examination” on Friday evening to try and unearth the true cause of the fires and ensure that they don’t reoccur over the weekend.
